Course Description:
A continuation of PY 155. Topics include: electricity, magnetism, wave mechanics, lasers, x-rays and nuclear radiation. Laboratory includes experiments and demonstrations to illustrate and emphasize concepts. 3:3:4

Educational Philosophy:

The instructor’s educational philosophy is based on inquiry and constructivism utilizing lecture demonstrations, discussions, readings, laboratory  investigations, quizzes, examinations, videos, internet, formal write-ups, a multicultural research paper and a portfolio.

Learning Outcomes:

Core Assessment:

The Portfolio assignment is worth 500 pts (out of 2000).

For the portfolio assignment, in addition to the multicultural paper, the student will select up to two assignments, quizzes, lab reports, tests that the student believes demonstrates that they have achieved mastery of the Learning outcomes listed above.  For each outcome the student will write a reflection paper explaining why those particular assignments, quizzes, lab report, or tests were selected and how they demonstrate the mastery of the outcome in question.  Points will be given for creativity and analysis.  This is one way for the student to take control of their own grade in this course.

Class Assessment:

  1. Readings-You are expected to read the assigned materials.
  2. Attendance-Attendance is required for all scheduled classes. Park University regulations state that a student will be withdrawn after they have been absent for two weeks consecutively. It is a class policy that you are allowed 3 absences (not associated with school events) without penalty. Each additional absence will result in a 5% reduction of your overall grade.
  3. Quizzes-A quiz will be given each week during which there is no exam scheduled. These quizzes will be given during the afternoon Lab session. There should be 4-6 quizzes during the term.
  4. Exams-It will difficult to pass this course without taking all the exams. Make-up exams will be given only if the student contacts the instructor before the next scheduled class meeting. A reasonable excuse will be needed.
  5. Multicultural PAPER- due July 29, 2010(hard copy as well as electronic)- This is a MGE class. To fulfill this requirement you will take a topic pertaining to Physics and relate it to global cultures. Your paper must be 5-6 pages of text typed (pictures, illustrations etc do not count as text), size 12 font (Times New Roman), margins no larger than 1.2 inches on the left and 1.0 inches on the right, top, and bottom sides. Line spacing should be 1.5. The Title page and Literature Cited are not counted as pages. The title page will contain the title, this course number, your name, and the date you submit the paper. The paper must have a multicultural dimension discussed in it or it will not be counted. Include a complete LITERATURE CITED (if it is not cited in the text it does not count as a source) at the end. It will be expected that your paper should average a minimum of 2 sources per page  to meet expectations (for a 10 page paper this would be 20 sources). Use a modified ACS format for citations.  To meet expectations you should average four citations per paragraph. The more citations/paragraph you have the better your paper should be.   In addition the more sources cited in a paragraph indicates a better synthesis and analysis of the sources you are using.    A word about the quality of sources: At least 50% of your sources should be from peer reviewed journals. In addition you may use one encyclopedia {but not Wikipedia} as a source for your paper (as long as you cite it properly) but it will not count as one of your sources for evaluation purposes. Remember the scoring rubric is available online.
  6. During each lab you will perform an experiment. From your observations and data you will write a report about the experiment. Before you come to the lab you should read the appropriate material. You should take notes in your lab notebook of all important points concerning the experiment. Record your data and observations in your lab notebook in pen. As you take data in the laboratory, it is not necessary for it to be in data tables. You will be making new data tables for your final report in spreadsheets and/or in lab handout sheets. Each experiment is designed to help you make observations about one aspect of the physical world. You should follow the procedures in the experiment except where you are instructed to modify it. The questions at the end of the experiment must be used as a guide to the necessary observations. The notes, which you have recorded, should also help you. From your observations and data, you will write a report about the experiment. The reports should be written on a word processor using a scientific report format. Tables are to be done using the table function on the word processor or with a spreadsheet. Graphs may be hand drawn or computer generated unless one format or the other is specified. After the report is graded and returned to you, it should be taped into your notebook.
  7. Portfolio – Due August 5, 2010-  For the portfolio assignment, you will select up to two assignments or quizzes or lab reports or tests or papers (per outcome) that you believe demonstrate that you have achieved mastery of each of the eight Learning outcomes listed above. For each outcome you will write a reflection paper (for a total of eight) explaining why you selected those particular assignments, quizzes, lab reports, or tests and how they demonstrate the mastery of the outcome in question. Be creative, thorough  and analytical.

The traditional scale is 90% = A; 80% = B; 70% = C; 60% = D; <60% = F.

 

HOMEWORK & QUIZZES:

Any homework will be due at the beginning of the class period on the assigned due date.  In order for you to receive credit for a problem on homework assignments you must show your work, equations used, and box in your answer.  Late work will not be accepted.  There will be weekly quizzes at the end of each lab period covering the homework, reading, and lecture material for that week.  The lowest quiz score will be dropped.  As an incentive to keep up and be thorough on homework assignments, I will replace the lowest exam grade with your cumulative homework average.

EXAMS:

Exams will consist of multiple choice, matching, definitions, listing, problems, short-answer, and essay questions.  You will be allowed to use one 3x5 note card front and back on the exams.  I would caution you however to be very familiar with your notes when you take the exam.  If you have to spend a lot of time looking through your notes during the exam it could keep you from getting finished.  Also, you will serve yourself better if you read through the test before starting.  This allows you to concentrate on material you are more familiar with first, so you can have more time for the questions that you may find more difficult.  In addition you will only be allowed to use non-programmable scientific calculators.  Make-up exams will be given only if the students contacts the instructor before the exam and has a reasonable (instructors decision as to what constitutes reasonable) excuse for missing the exam.

CELL PHONES MUST BE TURNED OFF DURING EXAMS AND QUIZZES.


Late Submission of Course Materials:

The instructor will not accept assignments late.  Assignments not submitted on the due date will receive a grade of “zero”.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:

Shoes(no open toed/heeled shoes) must be worn.

No horseplay.

No food or drink allowed.

Show respect for one another and cooperate with each other at all times.

Safety Glasses MUST BE WORN AT ALL TIMES IN LAB.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. You also need to read the Possible Penalties discussion on page 93 in the catalogue (Park University 2009-2010. Undergraduate Catalog).  A zero on a major assignment like the Multicultural Paper could result in an F in the course.  There are numerous websites that explain how to avoid plagiarism.  One that I would suggest is

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
