Course Description:
Introduction to the architectural, structural, and mechanical requirements as they relate to the construction field.  Emphasis is on understanding construction drawings, craft resources, material requirements, code compliance, and work scheduling.  3:0:3

Educational Philosophy:
I will use lectures, readings, quizzes, exams, and a project to determine student understanding of the material.

  1. Describe the format of construction drawings
  2. Be able to recognize and use the symbols used for architectural drawings
  3. Explain the analysis of dimensions and location of materials
  4. Discuss the construction techniques used in a construction project
  5. Reference the craft resources required to construct a facility by analysis of the plans
  6. Describe the materials and equipment required to construct a facility by analysis of the plans
Class Assessment:
The student is expected to complete all reading assignments prior to class and be prepared to partcipate in class discussions. Homework will be collected and graded. Homework must be done in a professional manner. It should be legible (neatly written or typed), well organized and done in a logical manner. Poorly done homework will receive a much lower grade. Students must take all quizzes, tests, and complete all homework and the project.

The final grade will be based on the following breakdown: Class Participation & Attendance 5% Homework 20% Quizzes 20% Project 20% Mid-Term 15% Final 20% TOTAL 100% -- 100% - 90% A 89% -80% B 79% - 70% C 69% - 60% D 59% - below F

Late Submission of Course Materials:
Late work will be penalized at a rate of 10% for everyday it's late, including weekends. Quizes and tests may not be taken at a later if missed because of an unexcused absence.

Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  3. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  4. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  5. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  6. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  7. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
