(2) Ability to run Java Applet: In each weekly homework assignment, you are required to execute a number of Java Applets associated with the textbook. Course Description:
This course provides an overview of computer networking concepts. Course topics include (but are not limited to): protocol layer stack, circuit switching vs.packet switching, connectionless vs. connection-oriented services, routing, Ethernet, LAN topologies, transmission media. Optionally, the course may provide hands-on projects. For example, students may be asked to install and configure a LAN, install and use Linus network applications, or write network programs. Prerequisite: CS208 and CS219. 3:0:3

Learning Outcomes:
  Core Learning Outcomes

  1. Explain and apply basic computer networking concepts including (but not limited to): *Circuit-switching vs. packet-switching. *Residential access networks - point to point, dialup modem, ISDN, ADSL, cable modem. *Physical media - twisted pair, coaxial cable, fiber optic cable, unguided media. *Protocol layer stack. *Client-server paradigm. *Calculating delay in packet-switched networks.
  2. Explain and apply several common application-layer applications in depth. For example, explain several of these applications in depth: *Telnet. *FTP. *DNS name server. *DNS name server. *HTTP web server. *SMTP mail server.
  3. Explain and apply these transport-layer concepts: *UDP protocol. *TCP protocol. *Reliable data transfer. *Flow control. *Congestion control.
  4. Explain and apply these network-layer concepts: *IP protocol. *Routing algorithms - link state algorithm, distance vector algorithm. *IPv4 addressing.
  5. Explain and apply these link-layer and local area network concepts: *Network topologies - bus, star, ring. *Error detection and correction. *ARP *Ethernet *Token ring *Hubs, switches, and bridges.
  6. Optional - upon completion of this course, the student should be able to do one or two of the following:
  7. Use and explain Linux commands and Linux networking applications.
  8. Install and configure specified Linux network applications. Note that teachers should cover this objective only if their site has spare computers that can be wiped clean and converted to Linux computers.
  9. Write specified networking programs.
  10. Use and explain Windows server administration.
  11. Design a LAN or WAN.
  12. If any of the above optional objectives are met, then some of the earlier objectives will probably have to be omitted because there will be less time to teach them. If that's the case, it is up to individual instructors to decide which of the earlier objectives to omit.


Core Assessment:




For this course, the assessment is based on a final exam. There will be 4 questions in each of the 8 categories, i.e. Synthesis, Analysis,… etc. Thus, there will be 32 questions total in the final exam. Furthermore, all 4 questions for each category should cover all 4 learning outcomes.





Grading:

You will be able to track your average exactly throughout the course. The grading scale is as follows: A = 90%-100%; B = 80%-89%; C = 70%-79%; D = 60%-69%; F = 0-59%. You will know in advance the standards for each assignment. My goal is to give you prompt, clear, and useful feedback to help you to succeed in this class. Each student is responsible for:

  • Completing Weekly Reading assignments
  • Completing Weekly Discussions
  • Completing Weekly Homework assignments
  • Completing Weekly Java Applet Simulation assignments
  • Completing Weekly Quizzes
  • Completing a Final Examination. This step is essential!
  • Completing a Online Survey of Student Opinion of Teaching

Reading Assignments:

Students will be expected to read the assigned chapters in the textbook and the lectures. The Online Discussions, Homework Assignments, Quizzes and Final Proctored Examination assume you have read the assigned readings.

Class Participation (Online Discussions):

Students should visit the conference area at least three times each week or a minimum three hours per week.

Homework and Java Applet Simulation Assignments & Quizzes

All assignments and quizzes should be completed on or before Sunday 11:59 pm Central time. Homework must be done independently. Students will place completed assignments in the dropbox. Do not post answers to quizzes or assignments in the discussion threads.

Submission of Late Work:

All assignments and quizzes are due 11:59 pm Central Time on Sunday of the academic week. There will be 20% penalty for each day that an assignment is late. Students are not allowed to take a quiz that is scheduled beyond its due date.

Proctored Examination:

Final Examination - An examination will be taken in person during the 8th (or 16th) week of instruction at one of the Park University sites around the country or at an alternative location approved by the University where Park University sites are not available. It will be the responsibility of the student to arrange for a proctor, by the 6th week, who will be accepted and approved by the instructor. Guidelines for selecting an acceptable proctor can be found at the Park University website. For proctored examinations, photo identification is required at the time of the test. A proctor request form will be made available to you during the first week of class so that you can send your requested proctor to me for approval. Failure to take a final proctored exam (or submit your final project for some online graduate courses) will result in an automatic "F" grade. Some graduate courses may not require a proctored final examination.

Course Grading Scale:

This subsection should list the grading scale and weighting for all of the graded work during a course. The grading scale must use the following scale below, and point totals for each letter grade must be included (see example below). Example -

C = 70-79% (or 496 to 566 points)

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  3. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  4. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  5. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  6. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  7. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
ONLINE NOTE: An attendance report of "P" (present) will be recorded for students who have logged in to the Online classroom at least once during each week of the term. Recording of attendance is not equivalent to participation. Participation grades will be assigned by each instructor according to the criteria in the Grading Policy section of the syllabus.

Course-Specific Policies
           

A class week is defined as the period of time between Monday and Sunday at 11:59 p.m. Central Time. The first week begins the first day of the semester and ends midnight the following Sunday.


           



           On-Line Participation


           

This course is offered on-line, over the Internet, using the eCollege course delivery system. Students are expected to devote a minimum of three hours per class week logged on to the eCollege discussion area the same amount of time you'd spend in the physical classroom. See "Ground Rules for On-line Participation" in Online Course Policies for additional information.


           

Weekly Quiz


           

Each week, there is a weekly quiz. The scope of the week quiz covers the assigned reading textbook material for the week. Most questions in a quiz are from the review questions at the back of the assigned chapter. It is to your benefit to go through all review questions of the assigned sections first before taking the quiz. Each quiz has 10 questions. You have 30 minutes to finish each quiz. You can take each quiz exactly one time. You must complete each quiz by Sunday 11:59pm Central time. Each correct answer in a quiz is worth 3 points.


           

Homework Format and Submission


           

Assignments scheduled for completion during a class week should be completed by Sunday of the week assigned. Homework must be done independently. Type your answer using a word processor. Do not post your homework answers in the virtual classroom. Post all parts of the assignment in a weekly dropbox, by clicking on the Dropbox tab at the top of the course frame and choosing an appropriate week: Activities. If needed, click on the Help button above for more information on Course Tools/Using the Dropbox.


           

It is very important that you verify your assignment is indeed in the dropbox, after you post your assignment in a dropbox. There are many instances in the past in which students thought their assignments were in the dropbox, but the assignments actually were not successfully transmitted.
