COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course introduces computer concepts, terminology, and applications to enable students to use computers in their education and career. This class will feature lectures, written assignments, and demonstrations of computer concepts. The lab will concentrate on hands-on computer lab projects using the Windows O/S and Office applications currently used on Home Campus. Software will include Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Internet browsers. Students will be introduced to the structure and use of personal computer hardware, peripherals, comparison of popular operating systems, recent history of technology, and some ethical implications. 3:0:3
INSTRUCTOR’S EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY: Professor Christensen’s educational philosophy is based on using a variety of methods in interactive learning. Lectures, readings, quizzes, group work, class discussion, examinations and writing are significant components of this learning process. Students will be required to analyze, criticize, and synthesize information learned.
COURSE OBJECTIVES: Welcome to Introduction To Computers (CS140). The next weeks will be filled with material critical to understanding the history and nature of criminal law in the United States. As assignments are completed, knowledge will be gained on the substantive criminal law, defenses, the criminal justice process and rules of evidence.

ACADEMIC HONESTY: Academic Honesty is required of all members of a learning community. Hence, Park will not tolerate cheating or plagiarism on tests, examinations, papers or other course assignments. Students who engage in such dishonesty may be given failing grades or expelled from Park.
PLAGIARISM: Plagiarism—the appropriation or imitation of the language or ideas of another person and presenting them as one’s original work—sometimes occurs through carelessness or ignorance. Students who are uncertain about proper documentation of sources should consult their instructors.
ATTENDANCE POLICY: Instructors are required to keep attendance records and report absences. The instructor may excuse absences for cogent reasons, but missed work must be made up within the term of enrollment. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of “F”. An Incomplete will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance (TA) or Veterans Administration (VA) educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student. Reports of F grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for students receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned above will be reported to the appropriate agency. If you are absent from a class meeting, you will be required to write a two page, double spaced paper, reviewing the major topics of the chapters, highlighting the information the authors intended to convey, in addition to any other lab or classroom assignment. However, legitimate absences are excusable if arrangements are made to make-up the missed work in a reasonable amount of time.
LATE SUBMISSION OF COURSE MATERIALS: For each class period an assignment is late, points will be deducted. No course materials will be accepted after the last class meeting.
COURSE ASSESSMENT: A variety of methods will be used to assess the learning that occurs in this course. Students will be assessed on their class participation, performance on quizzes, writing assignments and examinations. There will also be opportunities to work in groups, and to be assessed based on individual and group performance.
CLASSROOM RULES OF CONDUCT:
Students are required to read all assignments and be prepared to discuss the material in class. Students are responsible for obtaining assignments if absent and should be prepared to discuss the new assignment material during the following class. There will be quizzes and reading assignments for each section covered.

Students will be evaluated on the total number of points each student earns as compared to the greatest amount of points that may be earned in each class activity. In determining the number of points assigned to an activity, the major factors will be the following questions:
Was the work completed?
Was the work completed correctly?
Was the work completed on time?
All assignments are due at the beginning of the class period they are due.
Grades are determined on the following basis:
Scale: 90-100 A
Below 60 F
