Course Description:
This course develops curriculum and instructional strategies appropriate to the pre-service teacher. An emphasis is focused on developing knowledge of the Missouri Standards, lesson plans, and reflection techniques. The course is designed to provide the student with the skills to plan, implement, and evaluate both the teaching and learning processes for the classroom. Prerequisite: Admission to the School for Education. Students must earn at least a "B" in this course to be allowed to do directed teaching.5:0:5.

Educational Philosophy:
In a safe environment which fosters collaboration, critical thinking, group and individual problem-solving, and reflection, all students learn to apply newly learned theories and concepts to the practice of teaching in a practical, efficient way.

Learning Outcomes:
  Core Learning Outcomes

  1. Explore her/his beliefs about education, teaching, and learning and how these beliefs fit into teaching in discussion and a journal
  2. Cultivate a knowledge of the various aspects, both implicit and explicit, of the tasks of teaching in critiques of research articles
  3. Gain an understanding of the influences on a teacher's time and curricular and instructional choices
  4. Develop awareness in writing and discussion of choices and decisions that affect the teacher's participation in the classroom
  5. Design and teach lesson plans that incorporate discipline content and Show Me Standards for a variety of students
  6. Demonstrate chosen models of instruction for in-class and site teaching

Teach 2 classes at Park classroom

  • Course Attendance and Participation
  • 3x weekly electronic discussion postings
  • "Me Project"
  • 1x weekly e-journal entry
  • 3 school observations focused on teaching strageies/lesson planning/objective writing - 1 of which involves observing one of your class colleagues
  • 2 micro-teachings of 10-15 minutes in length
  • 3 mini-lessons of 10-15 minutes in lenth taught in your respective classes
  • 1 presentation and discussion of course readings - 90 minutes in length
  • Portfolio entries relevant to the above listed standards
  • Completion of the course's core assessment (UNIT)

Academic Honesty:

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Park University 2007-2008 Undergraduate Catalog Page 85

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  3. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  4. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  5. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  6. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  7. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
