Course Description:
A study of quality planning and control systems including application and statistical quality control theory to the design of quality control systems; the impact of quality on logistics and the procurement process. PREREQUISITE: MA 120. 3:0:3

Educational Philosophy:

The facilitator's educational philosophy is one of active participation between the facilitator and the students based on readings, lectures, discussions, and examinations.  The facilitator will encourage each student to express their ideas and demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the subject matter.

Learning Outcomes:
  Core Learning Outcomes

  1. Define quality. Provide a statement that covers the customer aspect of quality, predictable degree of uniformity and dependability, low cost suitable to the market. This should include comments related to a focus on continual process improvement.
  2. Explain the fundamentals of probability and statistical studies. Be able to calculate mean, median, and mode. Explain the difference between enumerative and analytic studies.
  3. Use control charts correctly. When given a basic attribute (P chart) and/or a variable (X - R chart) problem, calculate the center line, and control limits. Once calculated, populate the charts with given data and identify out of control indicators. Explain the process when revising the center, and control limits are necessary.
  4. Explain methods of diagnosing a process. Define brainstorming, affinity diagrams, cause and effect diagrams, Pareto analysis, stratification and Gannt charts.
  5. Define specifications, process capability and improvement. Explain the difference between performance and technical specifications. Explain the difference between natural and specification limits. Calculate a basic Cp problem.
  6. Explain inspection policy. Explain lot-by-lot, continuous flow acceptance and special sampling procedures. Describe the kp rule.


Core Assessment:


CORE ASSESSMENT: All Park University courses must include a core assessment the measures the relevant Departmental Learning Outcomes. The purpose of this assessment is to determine if expectations have been met concerning mastery of learning outcomes across all instructional modalities. The core assessment must measure at least 75% of the Core Learning Outcomes (CLO's). The assessment cannot be due until at least the 6th week of the term and must count for at least 20% of the final grade. The following assessment instrument can be given separately or as part of a final test. In either case, the test and results must be kept for further review. The assessment should be evaluated using the attached rubrics.



 Project: 



You are the new bank branch manager. Corporate headquarters (HQ) has embarked on a new quality focus. You need to describe the new focus to your employees, what is the definition of quality? 



After becoming familiar with the bank and its procedures, you've noticed the bank is very busy during the peak lunch hour. Customers are in a hurry, waiting becoming visually frustrated. You've decided to study waiting times of customers for teller service during the peak 12 noon to 1 P.M. lunch hour, which appears to be the worst time.  



A subgroup of four customers is selected (one at each 15 minute interval during the hour), and the time in minutes is measured from the point each customer enters the line to when his or her service begins. The results over a four week period are provided.

As a result of the control chart developed above, you've decided to diagnose the process. Discuss the reasoning you've used to decide the process needed work and methods you'd use in analyzing the process in question.



 



Assuming you have discovered the process to exhibit special variation and through analysis identified and changed the process to resolve the special causes. Drop the out of control points, and re-compute the control chart. Is the process now in control? If not, when does the out of control behavior occur?



 



Corporate has directed the branches to limit service time to no more than 5.5 minutes. Will your process be able to meet the new standards from HQ? Determine by calculating a basic CP formula and discuss why or why not.

Class Assessment:

Homework:
Four (4) homework assignments will be given at intervals throughout the course.  Homework assignments will be worth 5 points each and graded for completeness and level of effort.
 
Exams: 
A Mid-Term and Final Exam will be administered at the course milestones specified in the course schedule.  Each exam will be worth 100 points.
 
Core Assessment:
The Core Assessment is designed to challenge the student and to use the techniques presented during the course.  The assessment will consist of descriptive statistics, graphs, charts, and written analyses of the process being studied.  Minitab WILL BE USED for all graphs and charts.  There is no exception to this requirement.
 
The Core Assessment will be due the last class session of Week 7.  NO LATE SUBMISSIONS OR EXTENSIONS WILL BE GRANTED FOR THE CORE ASSESSMENT.  If the assessment is late for any reason, and grade of zero (0) will be assessed and a course grade of 'F' will be assigned.

Grading:

Final numerical rating will be the calculated based on the following point totals for each activity:

Each student will be graded on academic achievement and letter grades assigned based on the following scale:
 

A          260 – 280          93-100%

B          240 – 259          87-92%

C          224 – 239          80-86%

D          204 – 223          73-79%

F          204 or lower       72% or lower

The course grade for students will be based on the overall average of homework and tests taken during the course in accordance with the weighting of the various requirements as stated in the syllabus.

All final exams in all School of Business and Management courses will be comprehensive and will be closed book and closed notes. They will constitute 30% of the total course grade and will not be a take-home exam. They will be completed during the test week in the period designated by the registrar or by the Proctor in the case online courses. If calculators are allowed, they will not be multifunctional electronic devices that include features such as: phones, cameras, instant messaging, pagers, and so forth. Electronic Computers will not be allowed on final exams unless an exception is made by the Dean of the School of Business and Management.

Late Submission of Course Materials:

Late submission of course material will be handled on a case-by-case basis.  However, the student must make every effort to inform the instructor so arrangements can be made for late submission of any assignment.  Late submission of material that has instructor approval will not receive a penalty. Late submission of material that does not have instructor approval will be turned in no later than the next class session.  Non-approved late submissions received by the next class session will be reduced by one letter grade.  All others will not be accepted. Examinations may be made up provided the student has made arrangements with the instructor.  If no arrangements have been made, a grade of zero (0) will be assessed.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:

Professional conduct is expected by all students at all times, as well as tolerance and acceptance of other ideas and beliefs. A credible level of effort appropriate to the course material is expected.  Although this will vary from student to student due to work or personal events, it is the responsibility of the student to be adequately prepared for all class sessions.  Students are expected to communicate with the instructor regarding absences, perceived deficiencies in coursework performance, etc. Park University policies regarding academic honesty/plagiarism will be strictly enforced.  Any indication of cheating or plagiarism on tests, examinations, papers, or other course assignments will not be tolerated.  Plagiarism is the appropriation or imitation of the language or ideas of another person and presenting them as their own work, and sometimes occurs through carelessness or ignorance.  Students who are uncertain about proper documentation of sources should consult the instructor. Absences:  The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the term of enrollment.  What determines an excused absence other than TAD or medical reason is up to the instructor's discretion.  THREE (3) unexcused absences will result in a grade of "F."  This is the official Park University policy.  Please note that for an absence to be an officially excused absence (1) the instructor must agree and (2) the student must provide documentation.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  3. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  4. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  5. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  6. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  7. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
