Course Description:
This course provides an overview of database system concepts. The course deals with file organization methods, database models, data integrity and security, and database administration issues. The student will be introduced to application program development in a database environment with emphasis on setting up, modifying, and querying a database. PREREQUISITE: CS 219. 3:0:3

Educational Philosophy:

I expect students to prepare for each class by reading their assignments and completing their homework.  I will lecture and encourage interactive discussion on the material.  At the end of each class, I will host a lab on Microsoft Access.  The purpose of the lab is to expose students to the capabilities of Access and prepare them to complete the database project due at the end of the term.

  7. Describe a Data Warehouse including possible designs, use and terminology. (48, 49, 50)
  8. Explain and apply the fundamentals of Structured Query Language (SQL). (28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35)


Core Assessment:
The core assessment for this course is a final exam which counts for 20% of the grade. Questions on the final exam will be developed to test at least eight of the eight course core objectives. Correspondence between core learning outcomes and the sample final exam artifact are as follows:

Class Assessment:

Homework - Modeling, SQL, Normalization, and Case Studies
Mid-term Exam - Short Answer Essay covering Chapters 1-7
Final Exam - Short Answer Essay covering Chapters 10-18
Group Database Project - Groups of 3 students will create an Access database with all associated documentation
Presentation - Each member of Project Group will make a 10 minute presentation on the work they completed on the Project.

Late Submission of Course Materials:

Homework is assigned to ensure that all of the learning objectives are covered.  Homework is assigned for each chapter and is due at the beginning of the class period.  Homework not turned in on time will not receive credit.  If a student will miss class, the homework must be e-mailed to the instructor by 08:00 AM of the date due.  Students arriving late to class will not receive credit for their homework unless arrangements are made in advance.

The group project must be turned in on time or no credit will be given.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:

All reading assignments should be completed before the class period in which the assignment is to be discussed.  Come to class prepared to discuss the reading assignment.  Regular class meeting times will be used to discuss concepts and insights for each session's reading assignment.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  3. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  4. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  5. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  6. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  7. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
