Course Description:
Study of the effects of social variables on the individual, including areas of group dynamics, conformity, leadership, obedience, and interpersonal attraction.  3:0:3

Educational Philosophy:
The facilitator's educational philosophy is one of interactiveness based on lectures, readings, quizzes, dialogues, examinations, internet, videos, web sites and writings.  The facilitator will engage each learner in what is referred to as disputatious learning to encourage the lively exploration of ideas, issues and contradictions.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the course, students will have an advanced understanding of the concept of social psychology, particularly in the United States, and the impact social psychology has on virtually every aspect of society.

Course Assessment:
Study of the effects of social variables on the individual, including areas of group dynamics, conformity, leadership, obedience, and interpersonal attraction.  3:0:3

Grading:
The grading plan for this course will consist of the following:

Midterm Exam - 200 points (31% of the grade)
Final Exam - 200 points (31% of the grade)
Term paper - 100 points (15% of the grade)
Project - 100 points (15% of the grade)
Participation - 54 points (8% of the grade)

Grades, to include the final grade, will be calculated using the following method

90% - 100% of all points possible for the item = "A"
80% - 89.9% of all points possible for the item = "B"
70% - 79.9% of all points possible for the item = "C"
60% - 69.9% of all points possible for the item = "D"
59.9% and below, of all points possible for the item = "F"

Late Submission of Course Materials:
Any material turned in late will receive an automatic 15 point per day reduction before it is graded unless prior arrangements have been made with the instructor. The 15 point per day penalty will be added prior to the item being graded.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:
All material must be type written.  The instructor will not accept diskettes in lieu of the hard copy.  It is acceptable to disagree with ideas, opinions, comments, and points of view.  However, it is never acceptable to attack anyone verbally for their opinion, comment, ideas, beliefs, etc.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. <a href="http://www.park.edu/catalog">

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "WH".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
