Course Description:
HC491 Senior Seminar in Health Care Management: Capstone course in which students study selected topics on health care administration in depth. It is highly recommended that all major core courses be passed before enrolling in this course. 3:0:3

  1. Students will be able to identify several important contemporary health care management issues.
  2. Students will be able to analyze an issue, gather information, formulate defensible conclusions, and make recommendations for action.
  3. Students will be able to write a formal research paper in acceptable format, on a contemporary health management issue.

Examinations, (mid-term and final, 30% of final grade each), research paper, (30% of final grade), paper presentation, (10% of final grade)

Grading:

              The final course grade will be determined using the following measurements:

 

                             Mid-term exam                           30%

                             Research paper                           30%

                             Class participation                      10%
 
 

 

 

                    The comprehensive case paper must be typewritten and submitted on or prior

                 to 5/5 unless previously coordinated with the instructor. Late papers will be

                 marked down one letter grade.

 

                 The following will be used to assign course letter grades:

 

                                        90      -      100           A

                                        80      -        89           B

                                        70      -        79           C

                                        60      -        69           D

                                        Below 60                    F (for three or more unexcused absences)

The course grade for students will be based on the overall average of homework and tests taken during the course in accordance with the weighting of the various requirements as stated in the syllabus.

All final exams in all School of Business courses will be comprehensive and will be closed book and closed notes. They will constitute 30% of the total course grade and will not be a take-home exam. They will be completed during the test week in the period designated by the registrar or by the Proctor in the case online courses. If calculators are allowed, they will not be multifunctional electronic devices that include features such as: phones, cameras, instant messaging, pagers, and so forth. Electronic Computers will not be allowed on final exams unless an exception is made by the Dean of the School of Business.

Late Submission of Course Materials:

Classroom Rules of Conduct:

Class participation is expected and will form a part of the final grade. Students are expected to come to all classes and to be on time. Roll will be checked at each class meeting. Classes missed for legitimate reasons, such as illness, temporary duty, are excusable; however, the student must make up the missed work. The student is responsible for providing the instructor with justification for an excused absence either prior to or immediately after the absence. Two unexcused absences are excessive and three unexcused absences will result in an involuntary withdrawal and a grade of “F” (attendance) for the course. Cell phones, iPods, lap tops will be turned off during class.
 
Submitting someone else’s work as your own will not be tolerated. If determined by the instructor that academic dishonesty has occurred in any part of the course, the student(s) involved will normally be given an immediate grade of  F and dropped from the course. The second violation results in automatic expulsion from the school. The Assistant Vice President will be notified in writing of the action taken.

requirements, introductory comments. Discuss Chapter 1 and 2. Suggested topics for research will be discussed.

 

3/24      Discuss Chapter 3. . By this date students will be able to identify several 

             important contemporary health care management issues.

 

3/29      Discuss Chapter 4 and 5 of the text. 

 

3/31      Discuss Chapter 6 and 7 of the text. 

 

4/5       Students, by this date, will be able to analyze an issue, gather information,

            formulate defensible conclusions, and make recommendations for action. They will

            then discuss their chosen topic in class with the instructor.

 

4/7       Discuss Chapter 8 and 9 of the text.

 

4/12     Discuss Chapter 10 of the text. Review for the mid-term exam.
 

 

4/14     Mid-term Examination. Chapters 1 through 10.

 

4/19     Discuss Chapter 11 and 12 of the text.

 

4/21     Discuss Chapter 13 of the text.
 

4/26     Discuss Chapter 14 of the text.

 

4/28     Discuss Chapter 15 and 16 of the text. By this date students will have gathered

            enough information for the research paper to begin student presentations.

 

5/3       Discuss 17of the text. Students will be able to write a formal research paper in

            acceptable format, on a contemporary health management issue. Student

            presentations.

 

5/5       Discuss Chapter 18 of the text. Student presentations.  Research paper due.

 

5/10      Final Examination. Chapters 7 through 13.

 

5/12      Review of the final examination. Make-up student presentations.

Academic Honesty:

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Park University 2009-2010 Undergraduate Catalog Page 92

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
