Educational Philosophy: My philosophy of teaching is one of students interacting and understanding lectures, readings, quizzes, discussions, examinations and web sites. I also encourage each student to strive to reach his/her highest potential by applying what they have learned and discussing issues and experiences with fellow students and the instructor openly. I will engage each learner, encouraging the lively exploration of ideas, and issues. But my success in doing so is largely dependent upon you and your willingness to engage in class discussion boards, to ask questions of the instructor and your peers and to share your opinions and knowledge from other learning experiences. Therefore, you will be expected to discuss, debate, reflect on, analyze, evaluate and question the readings and other class material every bit as much as I am. Basically, I believe that you will get out of this class what you put into it.
Instructor Learning Outcomes
Learning Activities: Each week you will have a discussion board question or two to answer based on that week’s readings. Once your response has been posted, you will be required to respond to two other students’ posts. Therefore, you will be required to post a minimum of three times a week. The initial response is due by Thursday of that week and the peer responses are due by Sunday. These boards may not seem to have that much weight, but they will add up and all together equal the final or midterm.
Writing Assignments: Twice during the term you will be asked to prepare a two page response to a question that is presented that week. This is NOT the discussion board question! It will be under the writing assignment tab for that week. The paper must be organized clearly and answer the question appropriately. All work must be in APA format.
Quizzes: You will have two, one prior to the midterm and one prior to the final exam. Each exam will consist of a combination of various types of questions, most often including multiple choice, matching, true/false, map and short answer. These quizzes will be open book. They are designed to prepare you for the final exam.
Exams: Midterm and Final exams will be given as scheduled below. Each exam will consist of a combination of various types of questions, most often including multiple choice, matching, true/false, map and short answer. The midterm will also be open book but will be timed. The final exam will also be timed however, will not be open book. You will have to prepare and study for the final exam to be successful. Be advised that there is no make-up if you miss the Final exam session as indicated in the academic calendar for the semester.
Core Assessment: Case Study Research Paper - An 8-10 page (2000-2500 word) paper applying the Core Learning Outcomes of the course to the study of terrorism within a particular country. You will be asked to select a country or terrorist organization, of your choosing, to use for your case study by the second week of class. A detailed description of this assignment is provided in the "Attachments" section below.

Final grades will be based on the following scale:
A = 100-90%
B = 89-80%
C = 79-70%
D = 69-60%
F = 59-0%
Late Submission of Course Materials: Credit for Learning Activities is awarded to those who adequately respond to that week’s discussion board question. ONLY students who requested and were granted an excused absence for that week will be allowed to make-up a missed learning activity.
Assignments submitted at any time after the class period on the announced due date will be subject to 10% penalty for each day they are late. If you have requested and been granted an excused absence by the instructor for a class period during which an assignment is due, then you must submit the work by the alternate date arranged with the instructor. Failure to do so may also result in a 10% deduction per day after the alternate due date.
