Course Description:
HC491 Senior Seminar in Health Care Management: Capstone course in which students study selected topics on health care administration in depth. It is highly recommended that all major core courses be passed before enrolling in this course. 3:0:3

Educational Philosophy:
The facilitator’s educational philosophy is one of interactiveness based on lectures, readings, quizzes, dialogues, examinations, internet, videos, web sites and writings. The facilitator will engage each learner in what is referred to as disputatious learning to encourage the lively exploration of ideas, issues and contradictions.

  Core Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will be able to identify several important contemporary health care management issues.
  2. Students will be able to analyze an issue, gather information, formulate defensible conclusions, and make recommendations for action.
  3. Students will be able to write a formal research paper in acceptable format, on a contemporary health management issue.

Core Assessment:

Class Assessment:
In-class writing assignments and class participation will constitute 25% of the course grade. To receive full credit for weekly participation, the learner must actively participate which includes:

  • posting the completed assignment in each discussion thread AND posting at least one peer response in each discussion or assignment area no later than Wednesday, 11:59pm (CST).
  • additionally, the learner will post an additionaly minimum of 2 postings to responses from other students (peer response) in each discussion or assignment area by Sunday, 11:59pm (CST) each week (providing a total of 1 completed assignment per discussion araa and 3 peer responses to each discussion area by Sunday of each week).

A comprehensive final exam will be given over current issues presented in class, readings, and the content of papers developed by students, and will constitute 30% of your course grade.

The Formal Research Paper presented in APA format will constitute 45% of the course grade, and is expected to be approximately 20-30 double spaced pages in length.

Total Points for the course will  be converted to a percentage grade, and letter grades will be assigned as follows:  
Grading Scale A= 360-400 points  B = 320-359  C = 280-319  D = 240-279  F = 239 or less

The course grade for students will be based on the overall average of homework and tests taken during the course in accordance with the weighting of the various requirements as stated in the syllabus.

All final exams in all School of Business courses will be comprehensive and will be closed book and closed notes. They will constitute 30% of the total course grade and will not be a take-home exam. They will be completed during the test week in the period designated by the registrar or by the Proctor in the case online courses. If calculators are allowed, they will not be multifunctional electronic devices that include features such as: phones, cameras, instant messaging, pagers, and so forth. Electronic Computers will not be allowed on final exams unless an exception is made by the Dean of the School of Business.

Late Submission of Course Materials:
Late submission of work must be discussed and cleared with the instructor for each circumstance.  For example, getting clearance from the instructor for late submission one week does not give you clearance to be late every week.  Stay in communication with your instructor.  Peer responses are NEVER accepted for late credit after the week closes.  

Classroom Rules of Conduct:

Class Week: A class week is defined as the period of time between Monday and Sunday midnight, Central Standard Time, the time zone of the home campus in Parkville, Missouri. 

Students who anticipate receiving credit for participation will have reviewed the material and posted in each discussion tab the following:

1) Post the completed assignment and one peer response by Wednesday of each week, so as to have time to engage in class discussions in a meaningful way;
2).  By Sunday, 11:59pm (CST) of each week, post an additional two peer postings in each discussion tab.   This will total a minimum of one completed assignment and three peer postings for each discussion tab per week. 

Posting course assignments and peer responses late will have a negative impact on the participation grade. Peer responses are not accepted towards credit after the week ends.  Assignments are not accepts towards credit after the week ends unless prior arrangements are made with the instructor and will earn credit at half the original value.

E-Mail Procedures and Submitting General e-mail: When sending e-mail other than assignments, you must identify yourself fully by class and name in all e-mail sent to me and/or other members of our class. (Example:  HC491 U1T 2011, Julia Buttelmann)

My Response Policy:  I will check my e-mail frequently. I will respond to course-related questions within 24-48 hours (unless I notify you previously that I will be unavailable).

Course Topic/Dates/Assignments:

Contents of the project paper will include: (The order of these items are for instructional purposes only.  Please refer to an APA manual for the correct pagination of your paper.)  The Formal Research Paper presented in APA format will constitute 45% of the course grade, and is expected to be approximately 20-30 double spaced pages in length. 

1) Introduction (Overview, History, other needed Background)
2) Statement of the Problem (to include limitations, what will not be studied and q
uestions to be answered.)
3) Significance of the Study
4) Definition of Terms Used
5) Review of Related Literature
6) Data Presentation and Analysis
7) Conclusions (To include answering each research question)
8) Recommendations for Action and Recommendations for Further Study
9) References (and End Notes unless footnotes were cited in the text of the study).
10) Abstract of the Study (A title page and table of contents is also expected.)

Topics should be selected and approved by the end of Week One.
A more or less complete draft of items 1-4 are due at the end of Week 3.
Items 5 and 6 will be completed at the end of Week 6 (added to the study components previously submitted).
The entire study will be submitted at the end of Week 7, for grading.  Week 8 will be utilized for students to defend term papers.
(There will be opportunity for revisions in each section, based on interaction with the professor and peers until the end of Week 7.)

Week 2:  Problem statement assignment, definition of terms assignment, introduction

                assignment and significance of study assignment.

Week 3:  HC Trend/Issue assignment/discussion, submission of term paper draft (Parts I-IV).

Week 4:  Review of literature assignment.

Week 5:  Data presentation and analysis assignment.

Week 6:  Conclusions assignment, recommendations assignment, abstract assignment and HC

                Trend/Issue assignment/discussion. 

Week 7:  Submission of completed Formal Term Paper.

Week 8:  Final Exam and Defense of Term Paper.

Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. from Park University 2010-2011 Undergraduate Catalog Page 92-93

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
ONLINE NOTE: An attendance report of "P" (present) will be recorded for students who have logged in to the Online classroom at least once during each week of the term. Recording of attendance is not equivalent to participation. Participation grades will be assigned by each instructor according to the criteria in the Grading Policy section of the syllabus.
