Course Description:
PY 155 Concepts of Physics I (MGE): A non-calculus approach to physics designed to emphasis the concepts that are most important to students pursuing careers in health sciences. Topics include: measurements, force and motion, statics, vectors, and wave theory as applied to heat, sound, and light. Laboratory included appropriate experiments to illustrate concepts. 3:3:4

Educational Philosophy:

A learner has three assets they should make use of to succeed: their textbook, their facilitator, their peers.  Their textbook (and other resources, e.g. internet) will be ready when they are and give them as much time as they require.  Their facilitator will adapt to their needs and guide their efforts so they are focused efficiently.  Their peers, especially at the university level, are potentially their greatest asset.  Discussing concepts with peers will force them to refine their reasoning.  Whenever a learner requests or receives help from a fellow learner, both find the process elucidating.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. prepare a multicultural research paper pertaining to some aspect of physics in modern society using multiple sources
  2. apply Newton's three laws of motion, the universal law of gravity and the principles of kinematics to everyday situations
  3. a. design an experiment following the principles and tools of scientific investigation; b. hypothesize; c. collect, d. organize, e. analyze, and f. evaluate data; g. draw conclusions; and h. communicate their results
  4. analyze the impact of the concepts of heat and thermodynamics in real world conditions and situations
  5. evaluate authentic circumstances with regard to fluid dynamics using Bernoulli's principle, Pascal's Law, and the concepts of pressure
  6. elucidate the basic concepts of physics as a part of our daily lives using Physics terminology
  7. work cooperatively to develop solutions to problems arising from applications of physics to genuine every day situations


Core Assessment:

The Portfolio assignment is worth 500 pts (out of 2000).

For the portfolio assignment, in addition to the multicultural paper, the student will select up to two assignments, quizzes, lab reports, tests that the student believes demonstrates that they have achieved mastery of the Learning outcomes listed above.  For each outcome the student will write a reflection paper explaining why those particular assignments, quizzes, lab report, or tests were selected and how they demonstrate the mastery of the outcome in question.  Points will be given for creativity and analysis.  This is one way for the student to take control of their own grade in this course.

Class Assessment:

  • Assigned Reading:  Each student is expected to read the textbook, carefully and critically.
  • Homework/Classwork: Homework is due at the beginning of class; classwork is collected during class.  You are encouraged to work with your TeslaTeams on both.
  • Lab Reports:  The reports will often be collected at the end of a lab period.  The completeness, accuracy, integrity, and presentation of these reports will determine your Lab Report grade.  Lab participation is required to receive credit for the course.
  • Multicultural Paper:  This is a MGE class.  To fulfill this requirement each student will choose a topic pertaining to Physics and relate it to global cultures.  The paper must be 5-6 pages typed, size 12 font (Times New Roman), 1.0 inch margins.  The Title and Reference pages are not to be counted as pages in the report.  The title page will contain the title, this course number, your name, and the date you submit the paper.  The paper must have a multicultural dimension in it or it will not be counted.  Include a complete Reference list (if it is not cited in the text of your document it does not count as a source) at the end of your report.  It will be expected that your paper should average a minimum of 2 total sources per page (for a 10 page paper this would be 20 sources) and approximately 3 citations per paragraph.  Optimally these citations should be from different sources(demonstrating analysis and synthesis of the sources).  Use a modified ACS format for citations.  A Rubric and a citation handout will be provided.
  • Portfolio:  for the portfolio assignment, each student will select two assignments (lab reports or examinations) that you believe demonstrate that you have achieved mastery of the Learning outcomes listed above.  For each assignment you will write a reflection paper explaining why you selected those assignments, and how they demonstrate the mastery of a core Learning outcome. Be thorough and analytical in your explanation.

The scale is traditional:  90% = A; 80% = B; 70% = C; 60% = D; <60% = F.

Late Submission of Course Materials:

Late homework or classwork is never accepted and missed exams can not be made up (although see information on TeslaCredits below).  Labs can be made up for full credit if done in a timely fashion (i.e. within two weeks).


Computer and printer malfunctions will not be considered acceptable excuses for late assignments.  The instructor recommends that work be saved and backed up--a life lesson in general.


Classroom Rules of Conduct:

Students should have read the assigned material and finished any homework prior to class.  This will prepare them to get the most out of the lectures.  (Printing out the lecture notes ahead of time and bringing them to class is also encouraged.)


Students will occasionally work in groups called TeslaTeams.  TeslaTeams that perform well (high homework/classwork averages, significant improvement in exam scores, turning lab reports in on time) will receive TeslaCredits that can be used to drop low or missing homework/classwork/exam grades.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. from Park University 2010-2011 Undergraduate Catalog Page 92-93

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
