Scientific Calculator is suggested.  Something like a TI-30XA.  Graphing calculator is okay but we will not teach use of calculator in class.

Course Description:
MA 125 Intermediate Algebra Fundamentals of algebra. Topics include the real number system, basic operations of algebra, linear and quadratic equations, inequalities, functions and graphs, systems of equations. Additional considerations include radicals, rational functions, and basic analytic geometry. 3:0:3

Educational Philosophy:

My philosophy is one of preparation and practice. I spend a significant amount of time preparing to teach and I expect my students to spend time preparing to learn (i.e. reading the material, practicing problems and completing assignments). A student who is actively engaged in their learning will be successful. I also like an interactive classroom atmosphere so bring your questions to class and we'll spend the first part of each session doing Q&A.

  2. Solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable and verify solution(s)
  3. Manipulate and simplify exponential expressions
  4. Perform arithmetic on and factor polynomials and solve polynomial equations

  6. Manipulate and simplify rational expressions
  7. Manipulate and simplify radical expressions and translate into/ from exponential form
  8. Solve equations involving radicals
  9. Apply the method of completing the square
  10. Apply the quadratic formula
  11. Graph algebraic equations and inequalities of one and two variables.

Class Assessment:

Your grade will be comprised of Class Participation, Homework, Quizzes, Mid-term Exam and Final Exam.   Class Participation will be determined on how well you participate in class discussions.  Homework will be assigned each day. You should complete all assigned problems.  There will be 2 quizzes, a Mid-term Exam, and a Final Exam - all completed during class periods.

All quizzes and exams will be closed book, only a calculator will be allowed.

*The final is part of the core assessment. The final is a departmental exam and it will be provided to the instructor by the department of mathematics. The final is 2 hrs and only a calculaator is allowed..

Late Submission of Course Materials:

If a student misses class for an excusable reason, then he or she may submit the late assignment at the next session without penalty. Otherwise, assignments not submitted on the due date will receive a grade of “zero”.

Quizes and exams must be taken on the dates specified on the syllabus. In the event of an emergency (work or family), rescheduling will be considered.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. from Park University 2010-2011 Undergraduate Catalog Page 92-93

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
