Course Description:
SO 332 Dying, Death, and Bereavement: Examines the demographic, cultural, and social psychological aspects of dying, death, and the grieving process. Topics include cultural and individual attitudes toward death, the medicalization of death, associated institutions, end of life care, the social role of funerals, and various forms of death, such as old age, and dying young, euthanasia, suicide, and genocide. 3:0:3

Educational Philosophy:
My teaching style is a positive, practical, hands-on experience that is geared towards developing an understanding of the death, dying and bereavement process.  Class room experiences will include small and large group discussion and activies, lecture, text book reading, videos, research, and reflection on indiviudal and societal misconceptions.  All activities will be geared towards the understanding of a diverse audience including individuals with special needs, multiple learning abilites and styles, ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status.  Students will be rated on their ability to express themselves effectively through both oral and written assignments, apply critcal thinking skills, and respond with reflective feedback to discussion and subject.

Late Submission of Course Materials:

1.  Due to the design of the teaching model and students' presentations, no late projects will be accepted without prior approval from instructor and for reasons beyond the student's control.
 
2.  Work that is submitted late may result in a reduction of grade.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:
1.  The time, effort, and expense required for adult learning demands adult behavior.

 
2.  Please be on time, any student coming to class more than 20 minutes late or leaving more than 20 minutes before class ends will be considered unexcused for attendance purposes. 
 
3.  Attendance will be taken before class and after break. 
 
4.  Please turn cell phones off or to silent mode before class begins.  No cell phones allowed during exams or a zero will be given.
 
5. Students who are absent for reasons other than hospitalization, severe illness with doctor's note, deployment, or mandated service connected activities will be given an unexcused absence.  All work will remain due no later than the required class or points will be deducted from grade regardless of attendance.  If a student accumulates 3 or more unexcused absences their grade will be reduced one letter grade at the end of the term.
 
6.  Work more than one week late will not be accepted.
 
7. You must sent notification of absence by email NLT than Saturday evening following class to recieve an excused absence.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. from Park University 2010-2011 Undergraduate Catalog Page 92-93

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
