Educational Philosophy: This course is designed as an instructor-to-student led discussion: supplementing the text book material with "real life" relevant information. PS424 Industrial Organizational Psychology is the foundation from which you will build your knowledge and interest in human behavior and must be learned thoroughly.

Application Paper (Core Assessment)
Due: Week 6
Each student will select a film or television program that depicts a situation in a business setting or business organization and will analyze the film/program addressing two of the following topic areas: organizational research, employee selection, training, motivation, and/or leadership. During the search for appropriate films or programs, students should be mindful of what organizational problems are being depicted and select only films or programs that have clear-cut organizational issues that fall under the topics listed.
Before the paper is written, and by a date previously announced in the course, a half-page synopsis of the project will be submitted to the instructor and will include the following information: the title of the film or television program, a brief description of the film/program and characters involved, a brief definition of the problem(s) that are evident in the organization that is depicted, and the two I/O topic areas to be addressed. The synopsis should be approved by the instructor before the student proceeds with the project.
Research related to the specified organizational problem(s) selected for study from the film/program is to be conducted from a review of literature comprising seven references that may not include the textbook. Five of the seven references are to be scholarly in nature.
Each student should synthesize, analyze, and evaluate observations of conditions and actions in the film/program to arrive at a well-justified recommendation for a possible solution to the problem(s), citing data and information from the literature review to support the recommendation. The solution designation is to describe in detail the recommended actions that need to be taken, including who should take the actions, in order to solve the stated problem(s). The solution is likely to be multifaceted.
Papers should include the following sections:
1. Introduction – Include a brief description of the film/program and characters involved
2. Problem(s) – Describe in detail the specific problems found in this organization and how they relate to the two chosen topic areas. Since the instructor of the course may not have seen this film/program, it is important that this problem be defined in great detail, including several specific examples, to provide evidence of the existence of the stated problem(s).
3. Recommendations – In this section the specific recommended solution will be carefully outlined. This recommendation should include 1) the steps that should be taken, 2) who should take those steps, and 3) the reasons underlying the recommendation. This section of the paper should be the longest and most complex section and should demonstrate the logical and critical integration of data analysis and literature review that has gone into making the final recommendations.
5. Conclusion – Describe the likely success of the recommended solution, including potential shortcomings or potential negative side-effects resulting from the implementation of this solution.
6. References – Document all written and other media resources for the paper including the source of the film or television program.
Papers should be double-spaced, in 12-point font, and in APA style. The paper should include at least seven references, five of which are from refereed journals. This paper is worth up to 100 points. A summary of requirements may be found below.
