Course Description:
SO309: Sociology of Sport
Explores the dynamic relationship between sport, culture and society. Analyzes issues in sport utilizing sociological theory. Topics covered in the course include socialization, deviance, race, class, gender, identity, and the social and cultural contexts in which sport is created, given meaning, played and integrated into everyday life.

Educational Philosophy:
It is my primary goal for students be able to develop important critical thinking skills and knowledge utilization.  I am committed to exposing students to various systems of thinking and knowledge acquisition.  In doing this, I strive to make the process and the information accessible.  I strongly believe exposure to unfamiliar processes and information must be done in a manner that is both engaging and understandable for the students.  Upon the accumulation of new material, I want students to not only feel empowered to utilize their new found knowledge but also confident that they can apply their critical thinking skills beyond this class experience. 

Class Assessment:

Exams: Exams will be given for a midterm and final. The midterm will be given at the end of week four and is open book. The final will be administered at the end of the semester and is closed book but you may have hand-written notes.

Class Participation: There are two participation opportunities that are graded. First, you will be expected to participate in a thoughtful manner in online discussions with your classmates. There will be discussion threads for each week that you will have to conduct online conversations facilitated by questions posted for each chapter. Second, there is a weekly activity that corresponds with the material covered in each chapter.

Final Paper: Your paper will be an integrated sociological analysis of "Backboards and Blackboards" and the textbook utilizing three (3) or more of the different issues studied throughout the term.  The formatting requirements will be posted on the course shell. You should read "Backboards and Blackboards" as we progress through the term. It is a very engaging book and I think you will enjoy reading it whether you've had experience playing sports or are a fan of sports.

Civility: Some sociological theories do challenge common conceptions and beliefs on subjects. Classroom discussions are a vital part of the learning process. This class needs to be a participatory community of students engaging these theories if students are to fulfill their potential for learning. Some forms of argument are improper for a University classroom. Belligerent posts to other students or the instructor, abusive language, or attempting to silence an opposing view through verbal intimidation will not be tolerated or counted as a substantive post.  In order to achieve our educational goals and to encourage the expression, testing, understanding and creation of a variety of ideas and opinions, respect will be shown to everyone.

Academic Integrity: Plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of academic dishonesty constitute a serious violation of University conduct regulations. Students who engage in dishonesty in any form shall be charged with academic dishonesty. Please see your student handbook for a definition of all types of academic dishonesty. If you are found to have violated the academic integrity policy of this university, you will be given a failing grade for the class. For clarification of the specific policies, students should familiarize themselves with the undergraduate catalog section on academic honesty and plagiarism.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. from Park University 2010-2011 Undergraduate Catalog Page 92-93

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
ONLINE NOTE: An attendance report of "P" (present) will be recorded for students who have logged in to the Online classroom at least once during each week of the term. Recording of attendance is not equivalent to participation. Participation grades will be assigned by each instructor according to the criteria in the Grading Policy section of the syllabus.
