Course Description:
GGH140 Economic Geography (MGE): The course will introduce the basic concepts and processes underlying the spatial distribution of economic activities on a regional, international and global scale.  Topics shall include: economic systems and concepts, and impact on groups, communities and nations. 

Educational Philosophy:
Education is not only a state of mind; but a sense of responsibility.  While professional instruction is almost a necessity, the ultimate outcome of the educational process is more highly dependent upon the input of the students themselves.  Various concepts and ideas will be presented which beg individual analysis and interpretation.  This, in turn, should prompt group discussion and response to various viewpoints.

  1. Evaluate basic theory of economic geography.
  2. Analyze the basic features of the global economy.
  3. Analyze the relationships between economic resources and geography.

Paper Project with map (CA)

Class Assessment:
Class assessment will consist of four (4) examinations;  four (4) map quizzes; a term paper and one (1) comprehensive final exam.  All examinations will primarily consist of true/false; matching; fill-in-the-blanks; etc type questions.  Classroom participation will determine borderline grades.


The four (4) exams will be worth 67, 51, 65 and 44 points.
The four map quizzes are worth 20, 20, 16 and 20 points.
The term paper is worth 50 points.
The final exam is worth 88 points.

Late Submission of Course Materials:

All students are expected to be present on the days of the exams.  Missed exams get progressively more difficult.  There will be NO makeup of the Final Exam!!!
A five (5) point deduction will be assessed for each class period that the term paper is late.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:
Class attendence and participation are simply expected.  In accordance with University Policy, attendence will be taken and reported.  Any student who has two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences will be administratively withdrawn.  All students will be accountable for any material presented or discussed during a class period.  It is the responsibility of the student to obtain all materials and information missed during a class session from ANOTHER STUDENT, regardless of whether or not the absence is excused by the Instructor.  The Instructor is NOT responsible for providing the student with any lecture notes or other material presented during a class period.  Cell phones, pagers, etc are to be turned OFF in class

Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. from Park University 2010-2011 Undergraduate Catalog Page 92-93

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
