Educational Philosophy: Learning to write well is more than a means of getting good grades: it can mean the difference in the life that the student and his or her family will have, given the importance of good communication skills in the workplace and as a means of protecting oneself as a consumer. I thus approach the teaching of writing as a key component for every student's preparation. Students will vary in the initial skills that they bring to the courses, but everyone can always improve in his or her communication. Because I believe that credibility is of vital importance in getting ideas accepted, I hold student writing to high standards of correctness and organization, since these are the elements that instructors, employers, and others will use to judge the writer. I enjoy the way that online classes provide an opportunity for all students to become instructors, as they share their experiences and perceptions, and I think this aspect adds a richness and immediacy to the learning.
Learning Outcomes: Core Learning Outcomes
Every course has a Core Assessment, which is one assignment given in all sections of the course. For En 105 the Core Assessment consists of one final-draft essay from each student’s portfolio, chosen by the student, plus a Reflective Essay. Written at the end of term, the Reflective Essay must describe in significant detail the student’s strengths and a discussion of opportunities for improvement as revealed in the complete portfolio. The reflective essay must also analyze the student’s overall development as a writer over the duration of the semester/term.
Although all students in all sections will present a portfolio that includes evidence of prewriting and multiple drafts, the Core Assessment will consist only of one final-draft essay and the Reflective Essay.

Grading: The grading scale for EN 105 maintains an “A” as 90-100%; a “B” as 80-89%, and so on.

Late Submission of Course Materials: This course has been designed to lead you in steps through the stages of the writing process. Trying to do more than one paper at a time hurts your progress in this. Please plan your work so that you turn your papers in early, rather than risk turning them in late because of technical problems, illness, or other issues. I will accept essays, revisions, and the portfolio up to one week late, with a ten percent penalty for any of these submitted past the due date. (Thus, an essay worth 100 points will receive a ten point penalty.) None of these may be turned in more than one week past the due date.
Discussion board postings must be submitted by midnight on Sundays. The
discussion boards will close at that time, so there are no exceptions to
the requirement that you participate in class during each week in order
to receive participation credit for that week. I do not routinely take points off for initial postings that are done after Thursdays, but if a substantial portion of the class starts posting only on the weekends, I will begin to take three points off initial postings that are done after Thursday.
The writer's notebook assignment and final exam are due during the last
week of class. These must be submitted no later than the last day of
class (March 6). Park University requires that students who do not take the proctored final exam must receive a failing grade in the class, regardless of other grades. Please be sure to arrange for your proctored exam appointment early in the class. The form will be available for you starting in week two.
