Textbook:
This course is designed to engage the student extensively in the practice of writing in the discipline of Criminal Justice.

There is no textbook required for this course; however, there are a great deal of available resources that serve to provide guidance in completing your project. Previous program evaluations and research projects in your field of study should help you generate ideas in terms of how to approach, gather data, and evaluate a particular project. You might seek out your employer and ask for advice on what area in your workplace needs additional research or a current project that needs a substantial evaluation. Of course, I am available for any resource issues that you may confront. I have also listed resources via web-links in the syllabus as well as in www.parkonline.org in your class page.

Course Description:
CJ441 Senior Writing Project: This capstone course may be taken instead of CJ 440, Internship in Criminal Justice. It is designed for students currently employed in a criminal justice field who do not need the practical experience of an internship. Students in this course must design, implement, evaluate, analyze, and/or critique a project connected to their work environment in written format. This course may be taken online or an independent study in a face to face setting. The students advisor or the department chair must approve students to substitute this course for internship. 3:0:3.

Educational Philosophy:
All humans should engage in a life-long pursuit of learning and obtain a solid grounding in the fundamentals of your chosen discipline.  To that end, I work intensively to present you with the thinkers of our discipline and challenge you to absorb their academic views and develop your own, unique view.  I emphasize that students engage in critical thinking and dare to challenge the status-quo of conventional wisdom.  Students should be prepared to engage in lively debate and a passionate pursuit of knowledge and personal academic development. Park University, Fort Bliss Campus is non-traditional college format that requires the same effort as a traditional setting.  Consequently, students should expect to perform similar amounts of academic work to ensure they receive a thorough and quality education.  I integrate use of technology into courses to better prepare students for the realities of today's work places.

Core Assessment:

Students in this course must identify a problem/situation in their work environment which could be improved, research possible solutions to the identified problem/situation., evaluate these, propose a solution based on their work environment, implement the solution or propose the solution to appropriate person(s).  Students must write a 20 page paper explaining their project.

The student must create a research paper using an instructor approved project topic which is chosen by the student. Students in this course must design, implement, evaluate, analyze, and/or critique a project connected to their work environment in written format. The following format may be tailored to your work environment project:

- Cover Page

- Table of Contents

- Abstract/Summary

- Introduction

- Purpose - Identify the problem/situation

- Scope - Limit your scope to a reasonable level of effort

-Review of existing literature

- Investigate to determine if others have solved similar problems. For example, what equipment and/or technology did they use? Are there other studies out there that may help you develop a solution for your problem?

- Definitions - If you use unique terms/jargon please define them.

- Methodology - How did you collect information (Document review, personnel interviews and/or observation)? What analytical techniques did you use to analyze the information collected.- Tell the story of how you developed you paper.

- Document the results of your analysis, propose a solution based on your work environment and implement the solution.

- Cite at least ten (10) sources that are obtained from valid academic sources, journals, available from the Park University online library.  No Wikipedia allowed.

- Bulky items should be placed in an appendix (Cover Letter, Questionnaire or Data Collection Instrument, and the List of Persons Surveyed or place where data was obtained).

Where privacy may be an issue, the paper should only contain generic information (No personally identifying information - use titles or numbers to identify persons). Select a topic that is related to you work area/criminal justice/enforcement activities. Your topic must be approved by the instructor by class number two. The paper should be at least 10-12 pages in length. You must use APA 6th Ed for your formatting. See Learning Rubric below for additional details for the development of your work problem analysis project.

Late Submission of Course Materials:
Turning in assignments late is highly discouraged.  The class is structured to make assignments sequential so you can receive feedback and then make the changes necessary to successfully accomplish the next assignment in sequence.  Consequently, the late work policy is designed to encourage turning in work on time and to discourage late work, which will place you behind in the course.

Work turned in by the due date will receive FULL credit with consideration for grading input.  Example:  You turn in assignment 1 on time and through grading you receive a score of 95.  You will receive the full 95 as your score.

Work turned in 1 day late will have 10% deducted from your grade for that assignment.  Example:  You turn in assignment 2 one day after the due date.  Through grading you receive a score of 100.  You will be deducted 10 points from the score of 100 for turning in the assignment late and your grade would be 90 points.

Work turned in 2 days late will have 30% deducted from your grade for that assignment.  Example:  You turn in assignment 4 two days after the due date.  Through grading you receive a score of 100.  You will be deducted 30 points from the score of 100 for turning in the assignment late and your grade would be 70 points.

Work turned in 3 days late will have 70% deducted from your grade for that assignment.  Example:  You turn in assignment 6 three days after the due date.  Through grading you receive a score of 100.  You will be deducted 70 points from the score of 100 for turning in the assignment late and your grade would be 30 points.

Work turned in 4 days late or later will receive a grade of ZERO (no credit).

Classroom Rules of Conduct:
Students should arrive for class on time and stay the entire length of class.  Students arriving thirty minutes after class commences will be marked unexcused/absent.  Students leaving before the class ends will be marked unexcused and absent. Students must treat all in class with respect and dignity.  Abusive conduct will not be tolerated.  Students are expected to read the assigned textbook chapters and to be familiar with their chapter content before each class session.  Plagiarism and unauthorized collaboration on class work, or cheating is considered a serious violation by Park University and is not tolerated.  Students may be dismissed or given a failing grade if found cheating or plagiarizing.  Absences should be kept to a minimum.  Students that are absent cannot participate and will be given the indicated grade point reduction for each absence whether excused or unexcused.  Leveling work for absences may include detailed written summaries of chapters or completion of review questions or definitions at the end of chapters, or any other class-related assigned task as determined by the instructor.  Late class work will not be accepted.  Tardiness over thirty minutes, or failure to attend the entire class will be considered an absence.  Two unexcused absences will be reported immediately to the Park University administrative office for appropriate action. NO CELL PHONES, WILL BE USED DURING ANY PORTION OF CLASS TIME TO INCLUDE TESTING. STUDENTS MAY USE E-BOOKS DURING THE CLASS. STUDENTS FOUND TEXTING DURING THE TEST WILL RECEIVE A ZERO FOR THE TEST. ALL ELECTRONIC DEVICES SHOULD BE SHUT OFF DURING CLASS PERIOD. STUDENTS USING PHONES OR OTHER DEVICES WILL BE ASKED TO TURN THEM OFF AND STOW THEM IN PURSES OR BACK PACKS.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. from Park University 2010-2011 Undergraduate Catalog Page 92-93
Students must be aware that I will strenuously review their work for plagiarism. I will give a plagiarism presentation on the first day of class that defines plagiarism and explains how students intentionally and inadvertently commit plagiarism. Please be aware that I take plagiarism very seriously and I will apply sanctions to students that proffer class work that is plagiarized. So, please DO NOT plagiarize!

Plagiarism includes using another person's work, wholesale, without citation or the overuse of anothers work. Further, it is plagiarism to copy another person's work identically and submit it as your own. In any written work the majority of the writing should come from the mind of the student and not another. Papers that exceed 10% of anothers work will be given an F and considered plagiarism. Please think about your topics and use original thought during your work.

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
