Course Description:
Off-campus placement in a professional environment such as a graphic design studio, art gallery, or art organization, to gain insight into a particular art of design career and work experience in the field. Many different internships are possible. Variable credit from 3 to 6 hours (i.e., a minimum of 6 to 12 hours per week). Departmental approval required. Intended for seniors. Variable credit from 3 to 6 hours.

Educational Philosophy:
 

·         Design:  Design is a process that involves generating ideas, editing and refining those ideas and producing the final result. It is both individual and collaborative. It is both creative and meticulous. It involves critical thinking and effective communication through writing, drawing, describing, modeling and drafting. I believe in the universality and importance of the Design Process. Learning the process of design will enable one to apply that process to any problem, whether it be a written document, the design of a space or the design of a product. Every project and assignment shall be approached as a design problem.

·         Teaching: As a teacher I collect a body of knowledge and share it with other people. This shared information becomes a springboard to a variety of activities that reinforce the course concepts. Students observe, read, write, discuss, evaluate, collaborate and create. Cross disciplinary projects are encouraged and forays into the design community help make the boundary between the professional world and the academic world fluid.

Learning Outcomes:
  Core Learning Outcomes

  1. Participate in the practice of interior design under the supervision of a professional designer in an interior design firm, architecture firm or related business offering interior design services.
  2. Document observations and insights concerning the responsibilities of the practicing professional designer.
  3. Participate in or observe all phases of the employer's design practice.


  Instructor Learning Outcomes
  1. Prepare a representative sampling of work produced during the internship.
Core Assessment:
  • Completion of core assessment project:  a journal documenting experience (outcomes 1-3)
  • Reporting on experiences, sharing them with other students (outcomes 1-3)
  • Satisfactory employer evaluation (outcomes 1 and 3)

                         

Class Assessment:
   

      1.   It is the responsibility of the student to secure an acceptable position with a firm, designer or business prior to the beginning of this course.          

      2.  The firm and position must be reviewed with the instructor in advance and the instructor will notify the student of the acceptability of the proposed employment. This acceptability will be based on:

a.      The instructor’s recognizance of the professional firm and the nature of the firm’s work.
OR
b.      A submittal on the part of the student of material documenting the character of the firm and the nature of the firm’s work.

      3.  The student will give his/her immediate supervisor an information packet including thesyllabus, an introductory letter, employment documentation form and an evaluation form. The student’s immediate supervisor in the proposed firm must return the employment documentation form to the instructor acknowledging the employment of the student for at least the minimum required contact hours (depending on the number of hours credit) and describing the expected nature of the work involvement of the student.

      4.  Upon completion of the required work, the employer will be expected to:
 
         a.      Evaluate the work effort on the part of the student, using the evaluation forms attached.   
         b.      Recommend “Satisfactory” or “Unsatisfactory” for the student’s grade.

     5.   Work requirements for 16 week session: Three hours credit: 6 hours a week or a minimum of 96 hours.

     6.    The student will be required to keep a journal of the internship experience. Daily entries shall include a time log with hours worked and the tasks you did each day that you worked. Each week the student shall include a reflective summary of that week's experiences. The journal will be turned in at the end of the semester along with a portfolio of work, described below.

7.  E-Companion will be used for this course. Students will be required to participate in a weekly threaded discussion. Since this is a “discussion,” there will be a dialogue among the instructor and other students participating in internships. The threaded discussion will begin the second week of the semester. At least one new topic will be initiated weekly, but topics will remain open for discussion throughout the semester. Topics that may be initiated include:
a.      Describing your personal goals for the experience and evaluating how the goals are being met.
b.      Discussing insights you have gained from your coworkers, employers, manufacturer’s reps and/or clients.
c.      Observations about business procedures, policies and work ethics at your place of employment.
d.      Reasons your employer is successful (or not.)
e.      How the internship affects your future employment plans.
f.        How your education has prepared you for this internship. What you wish you would have learned.
g.      What have you learned about the duties and responsibilities of interior designers?
h.      What you have learned about products, suppliers, related services and other firms?
 
8. At the end of the session, the student will submit a portfolio including a representative sampling of work completed during the internship. Specific requirements for the portfolio will vary depending on the nature of the internship.
 
      9.  The student shall make an appointment to meet with the professor to discuss the internship place of employment, pick up the packet for the employer, and review the requirements for the class. This meeting shall occur within the first two weeks of the semester.

Late Submission of Course Materials:
   5% will be deducted from the grade for any work or forms submitted after the deadline. Contact the professor to make arrangements to submit work more than one business day after the deadline.

DEADLINES:
Schedule Meeting with Professor before Friday, August 26
Employment Record Form: 
   Form may be completed and sent via e-mail or postal mail, or hand delivered to instructor's mailbox, and must be received by the instructor by 5:00 pm, Friday, September 2. If the form is delivered to the instructor's mailbox, send an e-mail notifying the instructor that the form is there.
Threaded Discussion:
  The student must make at least one comment in the threaded discussion chain by 5:00 pm Friday each week in order to be counted present for the week. 
Employer Evaluations:
   Employer Evaluation forms must be turned in by 5:00 pm Friday, December 2.  They may be sent via e-mail, postal mail or hand delivered to the instructor's mailbox. If the evaluations are delivered to the instructor's mailbox, send an e-mail notifying the instructor that the the evaluations are there.
Portfolio and Journal
   The portfolio of work and the journal for the semester must be delivered to the instructor no later than 5:00 pm Friday, December 2. Make arrangements to hand deliver these items to the instructor.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. from Park University 2011-2012 Undergraduate Catalog Page 93

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.

INSTRUCTOR'S ATTENDANCE POLICY
Attendance will be recorded each week after 5:00 pm on Friday. To be considered "present", the student must participate in the threaded discussion using E-Companion by 5:00 pm. An "excused absence" may be given if there are extenuating circumstances, which must be explained in writing and e-mailed by Monday at 8:00 am. Three excused absences will be given. Each "unexcused absence" will result in a 5% deduction from the final grade.
