Course Description:
GGH312 Military Geography (MLL) An examination of human and physical geography and the role it plays in military planning of operations, its role in the eventual military outcomes, and a detailed analysis of how their results impacted the local and global society. Historic examples from around the world will be utilized for investigations. 3:0:3

Educational Philosophy:
Education is not only a state of mind, but a sense of responsibility.  While professional instruction is almost a necessity, the ultimate outcome of the educational process is highly dependent upon students’ input. Various concepts and ideas will be presented for individual interpretation and analysis. Students must read the assigned material, actively participate in discussions, and complete required course activities.

  Instructor Learning Outcomes

  1. Evaluate how physical and human geographic factors influence military operations and provide historical examples.
  2. Apply knowledge, especially of maps to assess geographic advantages and disadvantages within a military context
  3. Explain the roles and missions of various militaries throughout the world and throughout history.
  4. Analyse the evolving relationship between the military and the environment
Class Assessment:
Discussions, exams, quizzes, term paper.
 
The Final Exam is the Core Assessment for the course.

Grading:

Discussions - Respond at least once to a topic for that week, and post 2 responses to classmates’ postings. The first must be posted by Wednesday no later then 11:59 P.M. Mountain Time and the second and third by Saturday no later then 11:59 P.M. Mountain Time.

Exams – Four exams. Weeks 2, 4, 6; Week 8 comprehensive (Proctored) final exam.

Map Quizzes – Three quizzes. Weeks 1, 3, and 5.

Term Paper
Paper topic due by Sunday of Week 2 in the Dropbox.
Final paper due by Sunday of Week 7 in the Dropbox.

A six to ten page term paper is required. The subject should address the geographic influence on a particular battle or campaign. The paper should include a historical context of the situation; a geographic overview; the specific geographic impact on the tactics, strategy and/or actual operations; and the outcome. Possible topics are: Normandy, 1940 German invasion of the West, Crete, Market Garden, Barbarossa 1941, Dien Bien Phu, Anzio, Desert Storm, Khe Sanh, etc. Other topics may be selected. Use APA format. Cite references on the last page. Appropriate maps and references must be included.

Late Submission of Course Materials:
Assignments will be accepted up to one week after their due date (except for work due in week 8), but will be penalized one letter grade. Students may not make up quizzes or exams missed without prior approval. Students may NOT make up quizzes or exams missed because of unexcused absences.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:
Class attendance and participation are expected.  You have 9 days to complete the work for the week.  In accordance with University Policy, attendance will be taken and reported.  Any student who has 2 consecutive weeks of unexcused absence will be administratively withdrawn.  All students will be accountable for all materials presented throughout the course.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. from Park University 2011-2012 Undergraduate Catalog Page 93

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
ONLINE NOTE: Students must participate in an academically related activity on a weekly basis in order to be marked present in an online class. Examples of academically-related activities include but are not limited to: contributing to an online discussion, completing a quiz or exam, completing an assignment, initiating contact with a faculty member to ask a courserelated question, or using any of the learning management system tools.
