Course Description:
GO 125 Natural Disasters (MGE): This course will study the earths natural processes and phenomena that impact the earth. These natural impacts will be studied which result in massive damage to the earth and to its inhabitants. The course will explore how humans cope with natural disasters. Humans typically measure the damage in terms of loss of life or economic loss, but the end result is that these natural disasters influence human culture and population distribution. 3:0:3.

Educational Philosophy:
My educational philosophy is one of interactiveness based on lectures, readings, quizzes, dialogues, examinations, internet, videos, web sites and writings. I believe in education as a lifelong process and that each student is an individual with individual needs.

  1. Discuss the major reasons for most natural disasters and the impact they have on societies around the world and through history.
  2. Recall the details associated with famous natural disaster events.
  3. Identify precursors to various natural disasters.
  4. Discuss the predictability of various natural disasters.
  5. Compare and contrasts the causes of Earth's worst natural disaster, mass extinctions.

Portfolio: collection of 4 assignments. Each assignment is completely or partially related to each of the core learning outcomes.

Class Assessment:
DISCUSSIONS: This info will be made available in the updated materials within the course. Any relevant discussion, whether questions, comments answers or all three, will earn points as part of your participation grade.

Quiz Exams: To test your knowledge of the reading materials and PowerPoint Lecture there will be a weekly quiz or mini-exam. This 50 point weekly quiz is due at the end of the week. You may take the quiz one time.

Homework: There are two homework assignments that are due Week 3 and Week 7. Each is worth 100 points. The homework is due at the end of those weeks and must be submitted in the dropbox.

Final Exam: The final exam, administered and due during week 8, will be comprehensive and will include multiple choice, short answer, and essay questions. You will have two hours to take this proctored exam, and it will be a closed book/ closed notes exam. Here is more information to help you prepare for and take the final proctored exam:
The final proctored exam will be taken in a proctored testing environment during the 8th week at one of the Park University sites around the country or at an alternative location. Photo identification will be required at the time of the test. Guidelines for selecting an acceptable proctor can be found on the Park University Website.

Quiz Exams

There are weekly quizzes that are meant to be comprehension of the material that week, so think of them as a mini exam. These can only be taken once. Their format can consist of all the following: multiple choice, matching, fill in the blank, and short answer. They are open book, but I can not stress enough that studying for them would be a necessity.

Late Submission of Course Materials:
Assignments will be accepted up to one week after their due date, but will be penalized 10% per day. Students may NOT make up quizzes or exams missed because of an unexcused absence.

Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.
1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.

4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency

Attendance Policy:

ONLINE NOTE: Students must participate in an academically related activity on a weekly basis in order to be marked present in an online class.
