    Course Description:
    HC491 Senior Seminar in Health Care Management: Capstone course in which students study selected topics on health care administration in depth. It is highly recommended that all major core courses be passed before enrolling in this course. 3:0:3

    Educational Philosophy:
     The facilitator’s educational philosophy is one of interactiveness based on lectures, readings, quizzes, dialogues, examinations, internet, videos, web sites and writings. The facilitator will engage each learner in what is referred to as disputatious learning to encourage the lively exploration of ideas, issues and contradictions.

    1. Students will be able to identify several important contemporary health care management issues.
    2. Students will be able to analyze an issue, gather information, formulate defensible conclusions, and make recommendations for action.
    3. Students will be able to write a formal research paper in acceptable format, on a contemporary health management issue.

    • Weekly Discussions - 20 points each X 8 weeks = 160 points

      Students are expected to engage in discussion and activity in class. Students are expected to contact the instructor if they are absent to make up missed work.

    • Assignments - 30 points each X 7 weeks (no Assignments are due or finals week)= 210 points

      Students will turn in a weekly assignments as evidence of having read course chapters and reviewed Chapter PPT’s.

    • Article Summary - 50 pts

      You will be writing a paper specifically related to the issues surrounding a current health care article. The summary article should be a topic other than the one covered in your research paper. Article Summaries and the orginal article should be submitted into the dropbox area for grading. Guidelines for completion of the article summary are as follows:

      1. Locate a current article that examines a risk management topic that is relevant to the risk management process being utilized by health care organizations in the United States. (A Website is not an acceptable resource, BUT journal articles found on the Internet are). Articles can be found at your local library, a college library, or from Internet sources. The article must show a correlation between the management topic discussed in your textbook. Textbooks are not an acceptable resource for this assignment.

      2. Write a two-three page paper that includes the following components:

      a. A summary of the article in your own words: DO NOT COPY from the article!

      b. Your own personal reaction to the article: What did you learn? What did you think of the information provided?

      c. Your analysis of how the article demonstrates a correlation between what we have been discussing in class (and in the text and lecture materials) about an issue.

      In other words: What aspects of the article demonstrate how this risk managent issue relates to risk management practices currently utilized in health care organizations, government regulations, to HIPA regulations, and other risk management activities practiced in health care.

      3. Submit the summary along with the copy of the article by the due date listed by Midnight on Sunday night of this week. Papers should be submitted to the drop box area.

    • Research Paper - 200 points

      Students will be the lead facilitator of one or more classes each semester and will be asked to bring in two additional sources of information beyond the assigned readings and posted lecture that will aid in the mutual understanding and exploration of the material. These sources of information must be pertinent to the weekly lecture and learning outcomes and must take one or more of the following forms: (a) video clip (youtube.com, movie, news program, tv show, etc.); (b) appropriate website resources; (c) secondary source (newspaper article, chronicle article, or news magazine); or (d) primary source (research article, text, or original fiction or nonfiction book passage/chapter). Facilitators will also be required to pose one discussion question from each of the two provided sources to help guide class discussion.

    • Proctored Final Exam - 300 points

      There are 7 essay questions. Each response will need to be 1-2 paragraphs long to thoroughly answer the question. The questions will come from the weekly learning outcomes. Refer to the final exam grading rubric for additional criteria.

      You will have 2 hours to complete the exam. It is closed-book, and closed-note.

    The course grade for students will be based on the overall average of homework and tests taken during the course in accordance with the weighting of the various requirements as stated in the syllabus.

    All final exams in all School of Business courses will be comprehensive and will be closed book and closed notes. They will constitute 30% of the total course grade and will not be a take-home exam. They will be completed during the test week in the period designated by the registrar or by the Proctor in the case online courses. If calculators are allowed, they will not be multifunctional electronic devices that include features such as: phones, cameras, instant messaging, pagers, and so forth. Electronic Computers will not be allowed on final exams unless an exception is made by the Dean of the School of Business.

    Late Submission of Course Materials:

    It is easy to get behind in this course. This is particularly troublesome because learning the course is designed to be sequential and cumulative. Your active participation throughout each week will be critical to your learning and critical to the health of the learning community. In other words, if you aren't present, you suffer and your colleagues suffer. It is critical that you engage with the class consistently across the semester.

    The on-line environment requires us to complete the work for each week within the Monday to Sunday window. We will adhere to that rule. However, we have cumulative projects in this course, so it will be important for you to do the reading and the suggestions for preparation to succeed in the core assessment on a regular basis across the semester.

    This course is based on reading. You cannot succeed without reading the material, reading it carefully, and taking notes on what you have read. Simply monitoring the discussion threads and reading the class facilitator notes will not be enough -- citations from the readings and comments on the class discussion are required in every journal and you cannot reach successful depth of understanding without reading. Please let me know if you are having trouble understanding the material. You will probably not be alone and you will provide me a clear opportunity to help all the students engage with the ideas.

    Plagiarism:
    Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. from Park University 2011-2012 Undergraduate Catalog Page 93

    Attendance Policy:
    Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

    1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
    2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
    3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
    4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
    5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
    6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
    ONLINE NOTE: Students must participate in an academically related activity on a weekly basis in order to be marked present in an online class. Examples of academically-related activities include but are not limited to: contributing to an online discussion, completing a quiz or exam, completing an assignment, initiating contact with a faculty member to ask a courserelated question, or using any of the learning management system tools.
