Business Law With UCC Applications (Brown) is the main textbook used in this course. Contract Law Fundamentals (Epstein) is a secondary text that provides additional information related to the course material. It is expected that the student will read the supplemental text to enhance their understanding of the concepts presented during the course. However, the supplemental text is not included for any graded items in the course.

The facilitator's educational philosophy is one of active participation between the facilitator and the students based on readings, lectures, discussions, and examinations. The facilitator will encourage each student to express their ideas and demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the subject matter.
Learning Outcomes: Core Learning Outcomes
In addition to reading text materials prior to discussion in meetings and adequate attendance, requirements for successfully completing the course are as follows:
EXAMS: Exams 1-3 will cover specific sections of the text. Exam 4 will be a comprehensive Final Exam. Exams will be given every two weeks, and will be worth 50 points each. Exams will contain Multiple Choice, Matching, True/False and essay questions.
Final numerical rating will be the calculated based on the following point totals for each activity:
Each student will be graded on academic achievement and letter grades assigned based on the following scale:
A 297 – 330 90-100%
B 264 – 296 80-89%
C 231 – 263 70-79%
D 198 – 230 60-69%
F < 198 < 59%
The course grade for students will be based on the overall average of homework and tests taken during the course in accordance with the weighting of the various requirements as stated in the syllabus.
All final exams in all School of Business and Management courses will be comprehensive and will be closed book and closed notes. They will constitute 30% of the total course grade and will not be a take-home exam. They will be completed during the test week in the period designated by the registrar or by the Proctor in the case online courses. If calculators are allowed, they will not be multifunctional electronic devices that include features such as: phones, cameras, instant messaging, pagers, and so forth. Electronic Computers will not be allowed on final exams unless an exception is made by the Dean of the School of Business and Management.
Exams 1, 2, and 3 will be taken online, and will be timed. The Final exam must be proctored and will be posted in E-proctor, along with instructions for the student's approved proctor. When completed, the proctor will email the exam to the instructor for entry into the course gradebook.
Exams will be given on a bi-weekly basis. Each exam will be available at the beginning of the week according to the class schedule, and must be completed by 11:59 p.m. CST on Friday of the same week. Exams will consist of true/false, multiple choice, and short answer/essay questions. Essay questions should be answered in a few paragraphs, so please be brief - but thorough - with your responses.
Each student will write two (2) position papers related to one of their open forum topics, and will be due at the end of weeks 3 and 5.
The purpose of the paper is to allow the student to integrate the topic of choice with information from the text and lectures, into a written assessment that expresses their individual views. Any topic used in the open forum discussion from weeks 1-3 may be used for the first paper, and any topic from weeks 3-5 may be used for the second paper. A position paper is designed to express views on whether the topic is clear/unclear, fair/unfair. good/bad, etc.
The papers are expected to show critical thinking and be adequately supported with at least four (4) correctly cited references. Each paper should include a synopsis and evaluation of opposing views of the topic selected, which allows the student to strengthen their position through supporting articles. Each paper will be written using APA format, 2 -4 double-spaced pages, cover sheet and reference page, and will be worth 10 points each (20 points total).
Class participation/Weekly discussion
Class participation is worth 20 points toward the overall course grade. The instructor will monitor the weekly discussions for content, number of posts, and adherence to the Rules of Conduct. Each student will be an important member of the learning community and class participation represents an important component of this course. Moreover, the learning created through class discussions/postings and collaborative group work will be essential for developing an understanding of course material.
The student will read the assigned chapter(s) and be prepared to “discuss”/write a reflective response to the questions posted. Each week, there will be several discussion questions from which the student may choose to post a response. All students must choose one of the discussion questions per chapter and post a response for each question selected.
Students are expected to participate in weekly discussions. Posting responses to discussion questions will be accomplished by Thursday of each week, and students are expected to respond to at least three (3) postings of their classmates following the Rules of Conduct. When posting a response to a peer, you must thoughtfully reflect on his or her comments, and provide your own thoughts whether supportive or contradictory. Be thoughtful and reflective. Introduce new information from experiences, readings, or other sources, and respect other's opinions. Comments that simply say, “Good job” should be avoided. Please keep in mind the limitations of online learning and the possibility of making inappropriate statements. Please refer to the Rules of Conduct for further details.
In addition, it is required that the student perform an internet search for at least one topic related to the chapters covered each week. In the “Open Forum” section of the weekly discussion, each student will post the following: 1) the website link (hyperlink) for the article(s); 2) how the topic relates to the chapters being discussed; and 3) key points that are of interest to the student. Posting to the "Open Forum" must be completed by Thursday of each week.
The instructor will contact students who are not actively participating in order to correct any problems. If participation does not improve after being contacted by the instructor, and any problems resolved, then points will be deducted.

The following is provided as a guide to weekly discussion questions:

Slightly below requirements. May not display application and analysis of concepts, and critical thinking skills. Few examples are used and may support position with properly referenced material. Missing some weekly postings, or posts 2 responses per week.
Considerably below requirements. Does not display application and analysis of concepts, and critical thinking skills. Rarely uses examples or supports position with properly referenced material. Missing several weekly postings, or posts 1 response per week.

All assignments are due on the dates noted in the course syllabus and in the weekly unit instructions. Late work will only be accepted with prior consent of the instructor. All late work is due by 11:59 p.m. C.S.T. Wednesday of the next week.

It is important to remember that taking courses in an online environment pose special problems in the communication of ideas and through use of terminology that may be unfamiliar to your classmates. Statements can be taken out of context and may result in conflicts that could hinder a student’s ability to successfully complete the course, or alter their desire to continue taking online courses. Therefore, it is critical that all students abide by the rules of online etiquette when posting to questions or other student responses.
The use of acronyms or online “slang” is not considered appropriate for this forum. The student is expected to express his or herself in a scholarly, intelligent, and professional manner at all times. This is not to discourage the student from expressing their personality and humor in their postings, but please be mindful of the problems that can arise from inappropriate language and unfamiliar terminology.
Professional conduct is expected by all students at all times, as well as tolerance and acceptance of other ideas and beliefs. A credible level of effort appropriate to the course material is expected. Although this will vary from student to student due to work or personal events, it is the responsibility of the student to be adequately prepared for all class sessions. Students are expected to communicate with the instructor regarding absences; perceived deficiencies in coursework performance, etc.
Park University policies regarding academic honesty/plagiarism will be strictly enforced. Any indication of cheating or plagiarism on tests, examinations, papers, or other course assignments will not be tolerated. Plagiarism is the appropriation or imitation of the language or ideas of another person and presenting them as their own work, and sometimes occurs through carelessness or ignorance. Students who are uncertain about proper documentation of sources should consult the instructor.
Rules for Online Participation:
As an online learner, the student and instructor have varying degrees of responsibility. As your instructor, I have the responsibility to present the material to you that promotes understanding and critical thinking. I also have the responsibility to be exact in the expectations, content, and performance outcomes of all assignments. Being clear on what is expected and what the requirements are for all graded events is a job I do not take lightly and I will strive to be as clear and exact as possible. There may be times when this is not practical due to the nature of the assignment or other factors; however, these will be noted as the conditions arise.
As a student, your responsibility is to be fully aware of the contents of the syllabus, grading scale, assignments and due dates, required readings, responding to discussion questions, responding to classmate responses, and asking questions if any doubt or confusion exists. It is the student’s responsibility to be proactive in an online environment. It is expected for all students to understand and comply with the rules of online participation, as little tolerance will be granted to those who do not comply with these rules.
