Course Description:

This course is designed to teach teachers basic concepts of statistics: sampling and measurement; descriptive statistics; probability distributions and statistical inference, inclusing tests of significance. It assumes no prior coursework in statistics but fluency in arithmetic, the use of a hand held calculator and 2 years of high school algebra is mandatory.

Educational Philosophy:
The instructor’s role is to provide students with the opportunity to collaboratively interact in researching, presenting, discussing and applying information related to the course objectives. The instructor will provide a variety of learning and assessment opportunities including- writings, dialogues, quizzes, readings, lectures, examinations, videos and web sites.

Core Assessment:

(Final Exam):  Students will complete an open book/open note final examination during the last scheduled class period.  Two (2) hours will be allocated for the exam.  Given hypothetical educational situations, the student will demonstrate knowledge of basic statistical terminology and concepts as applicable to an action research environment.  Computation of basic statistics is required. Class Assessment:

1. Participation- Student attendance and participation is essential in achieving maximum learning. It is expected that students will log in each week and participate in online discussions. Each week students are expected to answer one discussion thread question and respond to at least one other students answer. Discussion threads 8 at 10 points = 80 points
2. Weekly worksheet- students will comlete the weekly worksheet. The worksheets are intended to be open book in nature and may be used as study guides for course activities. 7 at 10 points = 70 points
3. Statistical Applications (Simulated/Actual) - Students will use the statistical procedures and principals addressed each week to evaluate data and to make informed decisions related to curriculum development and revision, and/or improvment of instructional practice. 7 at 10 points = 70 points
4. Weekly Reflections/Lessons Learned- Each student should post a weekly reflection. These are personal reflections. In other words, they are what you think and believe related to what you are learning. Reflections should not be simply a summary of class activities. 8 at 10 points = 80 points
5. Final Examination- A final examination will be taken via email on the 8th week of the course. 100 points

Late Submission of Course Materials:
LATE SUBMISSION OF COURSE MATERIALS: This course is designed to emphasize the application of knowledge and dispositions through structured performances requiring the student to read, analyze, and respond to a variety of educational situations.  The articulation of ideas through verbal and written discourse is paramount in maximizing learning outcomes.  Hence, all assigned work is expected to be completed in a timely fashion.  A grade reduction of 20% will be assigned for late work.  The instructor may make modifications to these requirements for unique and/or extenuating circumstances.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:
Students whose behavior is detrimental to good order in the classroom or interferes with the learning of other students will be subject to disciplinary action ranging from dismissal from the classroom to expulsion from Park University.  Such behavior includes, but is not limited to, the use of abusive or obscene language, attending the class under influence of drugs or alcohol, excessive tardiness, and excessive absences.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. from Park University 2011-2012 Undergraduate Catalog Page 93

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
ONLINE NOTE: Students must participate in an academically related activity on a weekly basis in order to be marked present in an online class. Examples of academically-related activities include but are not limited to: contributing to an online discussion, completing a quiz or exam, completing an assignment, initiating contact with a faculty member to ask a courserelated question, or using any of the learning management system tools.
