Course Description:
SO 304 Social Problems: Review of major controversial issues facing modern societies, such as poverty, crime, deviance, sexuality, addiction, mental illness, prejudice, changing values, demographic pressure, surveillance, technology, terrorism and war, the provision of social service, and the balance between individual freedom and social responsibility. Special attention is given to global and cross-cultural context, and the causes, consequences and potential public policy solutions for each issue. 3:0:3 Prerequisite: SO141

Educational Philosophy:
This instructor's philosophy is one of interactive exchange with students by presenting the course material in a way that is clearly understood by each student to the extent that they can see how this learning applies to their everyday lives. This will be based on lectures on course material from the book for which the student will beexpected to complete research for each chapter and participate in debates. The instructor will also employ readings, in class projects, papers, videos, and other resources as applicable.

Class Assessment:
Discussion prepartion: Each student will be expected to prepare a 1-2 page summary of discussion information for each lecture. Students will be assigned to either bring notes either pro or con the viewpoint presented in the text. Students will use these summaries as notes to assist them in the classroom discussion and turn them in for grading at the end of the lecture.
 
Paper: A 4-6 page paper on one of the social problems discussed in class will be due during week 7. Students will be expected to write the paper using APA style. A minimum of 2 journal articles are required as source material.

Grading:
 

90 - 100% = A, 80 - 89% = B, 70 - 79% = C, 60 - 69% = D, below 60 = F

Discussion preparation notes must be turned in per the schedule on the syllabus unless prior arrangements are made with the instructor. The paper is expected on time and late submission of the paper will result in a loss of 5 pts per day.

1. Students will be expected to treat others with respect. 2. Students will be familiar with each chapter prior to discussion and have at least one question ready for in-class discussion. 3. Students will participate in every class.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. from Park University 2011-2012 Undergraduate Catalog Page 93

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
