Course Description:
MG420 Labor Relations: Consideration of the development, legal environment, and current problems of the industrial relations system. Emphasis is placed upon the historical evolution of both the union movement and the legislative system that shapes its activities. 3:0:3 Prerequisite: MG 352, MK351 and HR 353

Educational Philosophy:
The facilitator's educational philosophy is based on student and instructor interactiveness. The course will be designed around lectures, readings, quizzes, dialogues, examinations, internet, web sites, and writings. Learners will have to actively engage and dialogue to enhance the course.

  2. Discuss the historical and future trends toward labor and management conflict resolution.
  3. Evaluate how labor relations theories can be applied to workplace practices including the students own work environment.

Class Assessment:

Class Participation (weekly conference thread postings):  20% of your final grade.

Weekly quizzes (7 total): 25% of your final grade -- each has a 15-minute time limit to complete.

Research Assignment (due not later than midnight CST on the last day of week 6):  25% of your final grade.

Final Exam (to be completed in week 8): 30% of your final grade. 

Note: The comprehensive final exam is not a take home test.  It will be proctored as a closed book, closed notes exam. 

Grading:

Your Final Grade is based on a 280 point system.  You can earn up to 56 points (20 percent of the final grade) for Class Participation, 70 points for the Weekly Quizzes (25 percent of the final grade),  70 points for the Research Assignment (25 percent of the final grade), and 84 points for the Final Exam (30 percent of your final grade). Your final grade is computed as a final numeric grade (e.g. 252 points or 90%) and then converted to a Final Letter Grade as follows:

252 - 280 points will result in a final letter grade of an "A".
224 - 251.9 points will result in a final letter grade of a "B".
196 -223.9 points will result in a final letter grade of a "C".
168 -195.9 points will result in a final letter grade of a "D".
Less than an accumulated 167.9 points will result in a final letter grade of an "F".

 

The course grade for students will be based on the overall average of homework and tests taken during the course in accordance with the weighting of the various requirements as stated in the syllabus.

All final exams in all School of Business courses will be comprehensive and will be closed book and closed notes. They will constitute 30% of the total course grade and will not be a take-home exam. They will be completed during the test week in the period designated by the registrar or by the Proctor in the case online courses. If calculators are allowed, they will not be multifunctional electronic devices that include features such as: phones, cameras, instant messaging, pagers, and so forth. Electronic Computers will not be allowed on final exams unless an exception is made by the Dean of the School of Business.

Late Submission of Course Materials:
1.  If you are going to be absent, CONTACT THE INSTRUCTOR AHEAD OF TIME.  I understand people have work conflicts, emergencies, go to the field, and go TDY.  I will work around these things if you talk to me ahead of time. THERE WILL BE ABSOLUTELY NO DEVIATION FROM THIS RULE.

2. If you do not contact the instructor before you are late with your work, I will have to assume that you have no valid excuse for your work to be late, thus you will receive a 3 point deduction for EACH assignment that is late.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:

1. Turn in your work ON TIME unless you make prior arrangements with the instructor . 

2. Do your own WORK.

3. Be respectful of other students, but do not be afraid to offer constructive dialogue.

4. Failure to respond to the threads for two consecutive weeks will most likely result in dismissal from the course with an "F".

5. The Instructor will work with you if you have job conflicts, military duties, and family emergencies. The requirement is that you notify the Instructor as soon as you know there is a conflict.

6. Teamwork is expected of everyone but you have no obligation to those who choose not to participate as a member of the team.

7. READ AND COMPLY WITH ALL INSTRUCTIONS. If after you have READ THE INSTRUCTIONS and do not understand, call or email the Instructor. Contacting the Instructor is actually ENCOURAGED!

No cheating, do your own work. Cheating will be dealt with very swiftly and in a very appropriate manner.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. from Park University 2011-2012 Undergraduate Catalog Page 93

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
ONLINE NOTE: Students must participate in an academically related activity on a weekly basis in order to be marked present in an online class. Examples of academically-related activities include but are not limited to: contributing to an online discussion, completing a quiz or exam, completing an assignment, initiating contact with a faculty member to ask a courserelated question, or using any of the learning management system tools.
