Course Description:
Introduction to the law: contracts, agency, employment, and negotiable instruments; comparison of social responsibility and legal aspects of selected issues. 3:0:3

Educational Philosophy:
One of interactiveness based on lectures, assigned readings, dialogues, examinations, internet research, videos, web sites, written case studies and oral presentations of selected cases. The facilitator will engage each learner in a discussion of legal issues using the Socratic method to encourage the lively exploration of ideas, issues and contradictions.

  2. Discuss the role the US Constitution plays in the regulation of business.
  3. Recognize the difference between civil and criminal law, and the duties and liabilities with each.
  4. Distinguish between intentional torts, negligence, and strict liability.
  5. Examine the legal requirements for contract formation.
  6. Discuss what actions constitute a breach of a contract, and the remedies available.
  7. Explain the warranties imposed by law in the sale of goods

Core Assessment:

All Park University courses must include a core assessment that measures the course's Core Learning Outcomes. The purpose of this assessment is to determine if expectations have been met concerning mastery of learning outcomes across all instructional modalities. 

 For this course, the core assessment is a Comprehensive Final Examination to be administered in all sections of MG 260. This exam is worth at least 30 percent of the student's final grade and will test students' mastery of the Core Learning Outcomes (as listed on this syllabus) through definitions, essay, and/or multiple choice questions. 

 This core assessment is a CLOSED BOOK, CLOSED NOTES comprehensive examination that must be administered and proctored in the classroom and may not be given as a take-home examination. Students should not have access to the exam or its questions before it is administered. The duration of the exam can be no longer than two hours. 

 No computers, or materials other than a writing instrument and a calculator without text functions and communication may be used for the exam; this applies to all students, regardless of whether the exam is for on-line or face-to-face students. Completion of the exam is strictly individual; students may not work in groups to complete the exam.

Class Assessment:

Two case briefs: The csae briefs are a one page(single spaced) typewritten summary of a case of your choosing from the textbook, which will be oresenred in front of the entire class.(See Appendix entitled Reading and Briefing Cases on pages 22 - 24 in text for format and content) Two exams: The mid-term exam will cover assigned chapters up to the date of the exam. The final exam is  comprehensive. It will cover all assigned chapters. The mid-term and final exams will consist of true/false, multiple choice and/or short essay questions. The comprehensive final is not a take-home tests.  Exams are closed book-text and/or notes are not permitted. THERE IS NO EXTRA CREDIT!
 
LATE SUBMISSION OF CASE BRIEFS; You MUST present your TWO case briefs BEFORE WEEK 8. Case briefs presented the night of the final exam(Week 8) are considered LATE and WILL incur a 30% REDUCTION of allowed points.

Grading:

1000 TOTAL POINTS POSSIBLE. Case Briefs(20%): Two: 100 points each. 200 points.Examinations(70%): Two;: 350 points each. 700 points.Class Discussion and Participation(10%): 100 points. Note: Attendance, preparation and completion of in-class problem case assignments will be used to determine the class participation score. Deductions will be taken at my discretion.Total number of points possible= 1000. Grades will assigned based on the total number of points earned. 900-1000 points = A; 800-899 points = B; 700-799 points = C; 600-699 points = D;  0-599 points = F

 

The course grade for students will be based on the overall average of homework and tests taken during the course in accordance with the weighting of the various requirements as stated in the syllabus.

All final exams in all School of Business courses will be comprehensive and will be closed book and closed notes. They will constitute 30% of the total course grade and will not be a take-home exam. They will be completed during the test week in the period designated by the registrar or by the Proctor in the case online courses. If calculators are allowed, they will not be multifunctional electronic devices that include features such as: phones, cameras, instant messaging, pagers, and so forth. Electronic Computers will not be allowed on final exams unless an exception is made by the Dean of the School of Business.

Late Submission of Course Materials:
Late exams: you must contact me and arrange for a make-up if you miss the mid-term. If you take an exam late due to an excused absence, there is no penalty and you can expect to take substantially the same exam as the rest of the class. If you take the exam late due to an unexcused absence, be aware that the make-up may differ significantly. Please be advised that if you miss the final exam you do do not automatically receive an Incomplete. Accordingly, you are advised to consult the current Park University catalog concerning this subject.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:

Faculty members are expected to dismiss from their classroom students whose behaviors are detrimental to good order in the classroom. Such behaviors include, but are not limited to, use of abusive or obscene language, attending the class under the influence of drugs or alcohol, etc. Students who are dismissed from class may be given a failing grade, suspension, or expulsion from Park University. Students who exhibit abusive or obscene language toward administration personnel or support staff are also subject to suspension from Park University.
 
Civility in the classroom and respect for the opinions of others is very important in an academic environment. It is likely you may not agree with everything which is said or discussed in the classroom. Courteous behavior and responses are expected.

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
