Course Description:
HC491 Senior Seminar in Health Care Management: Capstone course in which students study selected topics on health care administration in depth. It is highly recommended that all major core courses be passed before enrolling in this course. 3:0:3

Educational Philosophy:

 
I consider all students to be adults, and to be in class because of their desire to learn this choosen topic.
 
To that end, I expect all students to attend each class ready and willing to participate, and learn.   

Learning Outcomes:
  Core Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will be able to identify several important contemporary health care management issues.
  2. Students will be able to analyze an issue, gather information, formulate defensible conclusions, and make recommendations for action.
  3. Students will be able to write a formal research paper in acceptable format, on a contemporary health management issue.


  Instructor Learning Outcomes
  1. Students will understand and be able to discuss research and the benefits of good research.
  2. Students will be aware and able to analyze their own research and articulate it and the findings
  3. Students will understand and have the ability to follow research paper criteria, present and defend their research in the proper format
Core Assessment:

Class Assessment:

 
Each student will be expected to exchange ideas and opinions in an adult fashion; to study and absorb new ideas that allow them to grow and expand - to share this information in a give and take format along with conducting in-depth research; compiling and analyzing the material for presentation as a final exam. 
 
Each student will be expected to develop a research paper, 30 - 35 pages in length, to follow the APA style, and the (CAR) Core Assesment Rubic distributed and discussed in class.   
 
THE FOLLOWING RESEARCH PAPER CRITERIA AND PRESENTATION IS MANDATORY: 
 
#1 -  Introduction - Overview, history and other back ground
#2 - Statement of problem, to include limitations, what will and will not be studied and the research questions to be answered.
#3 - Significance of the study
#4 - Definitions of all terms used
#5 - Review of related literature
#6 - Data presentation and analysis
#7 - Conclusions - to include answering each research question
#8 - Recommendations or actions needed and recommendations for further study

Grading:

 
Letter grades of A,B,C,D and F will be used
 
90-100 - A                          Literature Search -  25% of grade  - 100 points
80 - 89 - B                          Research and Class Participation -  25% of grade -  100 points
70 - 79 - C                          Completed Research Paper - 25% of grade  -  100 points
60 - 69 - D                          Presentation and defense  -  25% of grade -  100 points
Below 60 -  F                      Total points available -  400  

The course grade for students will be based on the overall average of homework and tests taken during the course in accordance with the weighting of the various requirements as stated in the syllabus.

All final exams in all School of Business courses will be comprehensive and will be closed book and closed notes. They will constitute 30% of the total course grade and will not be a take-home exam. They will be completed during the test week in the period designated by the registrar or by the Proctor in the case online courses. If calculators are allowed, they will not be multifunctional electronic devices that include features such as: phones, cameras, instant messaging, pagers, and so forth. Electronic Computers will not be allowed on final exams unless an exception is made by the Dean of the School of Business.

Late Submission of Course Materials:
 
Due to the short semester, and importance of research and presentation, THERE CAN BE NO LATE SUBMISSIONS
 
Topics will be elected and approved by week two (2) -  This cannot be completed any later as student will not have time to do a through research project. 
 
Entire, completed paper, presentation and discussion is due week eight (8) with no later classes to defer to  -   it MUST BE COMPLETED AND PRESENTED THE 8TH AND FINAL WEEK OF CLASS. 

Classroom Rules of Conduct:

 
All cell phones will be turned off during class
 
Each student will be present for the entire class and willing to participate in the discussions and sharing of ideas and opinons.
 
Full resepct will be given to fellow students and instructior at all times.   

Course Topic/Dates/Assignments:

 
Class 1 and 2 -  Chapters 1,2,3 and 4 -  Students will study and have a broad understanding of what research is - identifying a topic, reviewing literature, refining the questions and developing the background. 
An issue and topic will be declared for approval and plans set out. 
 
Class 2 and 3 -  Chapters 9,10,11 12 and 13 - Students will be able to discuss and understand Qualitiative Research Designs, and Analyzing Qualitative Data.
Students will understand the importance of final preparation before implementng a research plan. 
Students will have a rough draft of the outline e-mailed to instructor by date agreed upon in class.
 
 
Class 3 and 4 -  Open for study, research and assistance as needed -  All students will have a broad understanding and be able to discuss the issues being studied. 
 
Class 5 and 6 -  Items 1,2,3 and 4 due for discussion and study by class
 
Class 7 -  Items 5,6,7 and 8 due for discussion and study by class
 
Class 8 -  Completed papers due and presentation to be given -  CLASS CLOSURE.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. from Park University 2011-2012 Undergraduate Catalog Page 93

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
