Course Description:
 

   

      Senior Project is the capstone course of your education in communications at Park University. It is designed to draw together all you have learned, not just in communications but in your General Education and Liberal Learnings courses as well.

    Think of the Senior Project as yours. Think of it as the application of all the fine things you have experienced in your undergraduate education. You will decide exactly what your project will be. Think of a project that you can plop on a prospective employer’s desk and say, “I did this!”

    Think of it as the performance, not the rehearsal. It is designed to embody the work you will do in the world after you graduate from Park.

I believe learning should be hands-on process, and that teaching should be done using a variety of tools and approaches.

Learning Outcomes:
  Core Learning Outcomes

  1. To design an original research project that examines a specific area within the communication discipline.
  2. To clearly and concisely state the goals of the project and the questions to be explored.
  3. To provide an overview of the scholarly literature in the area of inquiry.
  4. To select an appropriate methodology to gather data that addresses the research questions.
  5. To critically examine the data and draw appropriate conclusions that are consistent with the evidence.


  Instructor Learning Outcomes
  1. 1. Master the technology of radio and TV. You will demonstrate this mastery by producing technically-clean, technologically complex, creative, and original professional-level radio-TV programming.
  2. 2. Evaluate and critically analyze your own work, and work done by others, and assess the progress you've made toward achieving professionalism as a broadcaster.
  3. 3. Write, edit, and voice professional-quality radio products (newscasts, sportscasts, PSA's, promotional announcements, etc.) and TV products (news pieces, PR pieces, interview and other programming) that are accurate, timely, balanced, and reflect the principles of good broadcast journalism and professional broadcast production.
  4. 4. Develop and analyze your own professional “voice” as you produce professional TV and radio programming.
  5. 5. Develop, plan, and produce creative, original, interesting TV and radio production pieces and programs.
  6. 6. Demonstrate a professional level of competence in the broadcasting field. This will be demonstrated in the production of a radio or TV project that demonstrates a professional-level sophistication in the writing, announcing, shooting, recording, and editing of a major project. The project will demonstrate an understanding of FCC and professional guidelines, be thoroughly researched and well written, and technically sound, accurate, fair, and take into account diverse perspectives.
Core Assessment:

The core assessment consists of a two-semester, five part research project containing a Introduction, Review of the Literature, Research Methodology, Results and Discussion, and Directions for Future Research. (Rubric Attached) {Assesses outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5}

Class Assessment:

 PLEASE DISREGARD CORE LEARNING OUTCOMES AND CORE ASSESSMENT LISTED ABOVE. THESE ARE FOR ANOTHER SECTION OF SENIOR PROJECT, AND THE SYSTEM WON'T LET ME ELIMINATE THEM. USE THE SIX INSTRUCTOR LEARNING OUTCOMES AND THE CORE ASSESSMENT LISTED BELOW AS YOUR REFERENCE.
 
 Class Assessment
Your assessment will be based on meeting with the instructor, writing your project plan, the project itself, and your self-evaluation of the project.
 
Core Assessment

Every course at Park University requires a core assessment. This is one major project or test, given during the last part of the class, that measures 75% of the course’s learning objectives. The core assessment for CA491 is the senior project. It will be graded using a rubric which will be distributed to you.

Grading:
  

 

1.      5%--Three (minimum) meetings with instructor about the project.

2.      15%--4-6 page paper detailing what your senior project will be about. Due week three of the semester. This will include:

    a. A description of the project. What exactly will it entail?

    b. A strategy for doing it. What research method will you use? What professional skills will you need? What materials?

    c. A comprehensive list of criteria by which the excellence of this project will be judged. Your major professor, as well as professionals in your field, can be a strong influence here. Be as specific as possible, and remember: You are creating your own grade sheet.

   d. A timetable for completing the project. Be specific here. Break your project into sub-tasks, then have due dates during the semester for those tasks.

   e. A professional consultation. You will meet with a professional in your field, who will offer suggestions and comments about your plan.

3.      70%--Your project.

4.      10%--Self-critique of senior project. More details on this later. This is also due the last Monday of classes. Late critiques will not be accepted.

Late Submission of Course Materials:
 

I will not accept late work. The only exception to this is if there is some extenuating circumstance, and you contact me IN ADVANCE to get an extension. If you have a problem that precludes you from turning a work in on time, call or e-mail me IN ADVANCE of the due date, let me know what’s going on, and we can make arrangements.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. from Park University 2011-2012 Undergraduate Catalog Page 93

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
