Course Description:
MG268 Office Administration: Layout and organization of an office; design and control of equipment and supplies; business information processing systems; human relations; and cost reduction. 3:0:3

Learning Outcomes:
  Core Learning Outcomes

  1. Evaluate the basic concepts and trends in administration office management, including traditional office management practices, emerging elements of management and practices, administrative management resource areas and restructured office systems and training needs.
  2. Explain leadership and communication skills in business environments, including groups, teams and conflict issues.
  3. Critique managing human resources in the office. These resources include staffing and on-the-job employee practices, as well as work ethics and business etiquette issues.
  4. Explain how to manage computer, telecommunications and office network systems.
  5. Evaluate the concept of connectivity with Internet services and managing distant workers.
  6. 6. Identify the trends and challenges in administrative office management as a result of new technology

Core Assessment:

The assessment device will be a final paper in which the Core Learning Outcomes are addressed by using the internet to research the most recently published research about issues, products and services that relate to the textbook material.

Class Assessment:
Examinations, papers, homework, case studies, and class participation/discussion.  The comprehensive final exam is not a take-home exam.  The comprehensive final is not an open book, open note exam.

Grading:

Grading Plan Total of 600 points.
 
20% Critical Questions;  120 points (Each Chapter 8 points each)
 
12.5% Case Studies: 75 points (Each Chapter x 5 points)
 
26.5% Core Assignment Paper: 159 points (Required by Park)
 
11% Mid-Term Exam: 66 points
 
30% Final: 180 points
 
A=100 - 90; B=89 -80; C=79 - 70; D=69 - 60; F= 59 and below

The course grade for students will be based on the overall average of homework and tests taken during the course in accordance with the weighting of the various requirements as stated in the syllabus.

All final exams in all School of Business courses will be comprehensive and will be closed book and closed notes. They will constitute 30% of the total course grade and will not be a take-home exam. They will be completed during the test week in the period designated by the registrar or by the Proctor in the case online courses. If calculators are allowed, they will not be multifunctional electronic devices that include features such as: phones, cameras, instant messaging, pagers, and so forth. Electronic Computers will not be allowed on final exams unless an exception is made by the Dean of the School of Business.

Late Submission of Course Materials:
You will lose points for late assignments.  If you know you will be gone, you must talk to me BEFORE you leave.  If there is an emergency, call me as soon as you have the situation under control or email me.  Be honest with me and I will work with you!  I ask that you do not discuss an exception I have made for you with other students.  Each person's life is different so my decisions are based off the situation.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:
Class room will be treated as place of business only.  Please keep all conversation down to what the subject is we are discussing.  Please turn off all cell phones.  If you receive a phone call in class please take it out in the hall so you will not disturbe the rest of the class.  Please be on time ready for class.  Be respective to others and their opinions.

* Case Studies must be double spaced with a minimum of 1 page
* Core Assessment "Paper" must follow APA style writing
* Use proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling, this will be graded
* Assignments are due by the due date provided
* Please meet all deadlines however, you can submit assignments ahead of time.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. from Park University 2011-2012 Undergraduate Catalog Page 93

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
