This is a new edition, do not purchased the 10th edition for use in this class.
 
Do not purchase an Annotated Instructor's Edition. If so, the instructor will have you return it for a Student Edition. 

Textbooks can be purchased through the MBS bookstore

Additional Resources:

Students will need a calculator, 12 inch ruler, stapler, as well as paper and pencils. (Be advised: do not purchase an instructor copy of the textbook. If you do, it will be taken away from you).
 
Be sure to obtain a copy of the course syllabus before the first night of class. Every student will need their own book. Sharing a textbook does not work out well.

Course Description:
MA 125 Intermediate Algebra Fundamentals of algebra. Topics include the real number system, basic operations of algebra, linear and quadratic equations, inequalities, functions and graphs, systems of equations. Additional considerations include radicals, rational functions, and basic analytic geometry. 3:0:3
 
This class is aimed at preparing students for MA135-College Algebra.

Educational Philosophy:
Success in this course comes from hard work/study of the course materials.Questions should be asked about content the student does not understand. This particular course is important because it leads up to the next course taken which should be COLLEGE ALGEBRA.

  1. State and use basic terminology and symbols of the discipline appropriately
  2. Solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable and verify solution(s)
  3. Manipulate and simplify exponential expressions
  4. Perform arithmetic on and factor polynomials and solve polynomial equations
  5. Solve “word” problems
  6. Manipulate and simplify rational expressions
  7. Manipulate and simplify radical expressions and translate into/ from exponential form
  8. Solve equations involving radicals
  9. Apply the method of completing the square
  10. Apply the quadratic formula
  11. Graph algebraic equations and inequalities of one and two variables.

Class Assessment:
Learning will be assessed through homewok, examinations, class work and participation.

Grading:

Homework---200 pts.  Mid-term Examination---150 pts.  Final Examination---150 pts.
TOTAL: 500 pts.
 
 
NOTE: The final examination could be part of the core assesement for this course, in that it could be a departmental exam and if so, it will be provided to the instructor by the department of Mathematics.

Late Submission of Course Materials:

Late work will not be accepted except for valid reasons that must be worked out with the instructor before hand. No extra time will be given for completing assignments. Examinations as a minimum must be taken when they are scheduled.
Students who do not take the examinations on the scheduled nights, will be docked 25 points unless an acceptible reason has been given to the instructor.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:
All students must have respect for other students and come to class prepared for instruction. Cell phones must be turned on silent mode during class. Instructor does not like cell phones going off in class and will tell you about it when it occurs. Missing one class can be very detrimental to you passing this course.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. from Park University 2011-2012 Undergraduate Catalog Page 93

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
