Course Description:
HC491 Senior Seminar in Health Care Management: Capstone course in which students study selected topics on health care administration in depth. It is highly recommended that all major core courses be passed before enrolling in this course. 3:0:3

Educational Philosophy:

The students will learn and apply all of their learned subjects from past course work; by using lectures, presentations, discussion, roundtable discussion of current state of healthcare management. They will learn to apply new and innovating ways to turn a healthcare facility into a progressive and succefuls organization. This will be accomplished by reviewing the new information on healthcare management in the 21st century, which has gone through political and financial restructering over the last decade.

  1. Students will be able to identify several important contemporary health care management issues.
  2. Students will be able to analyze an issue, gather information, formulate defensible conclusions, and make recommendations for action.
  3. Students will be able to write a formal research paper in acceptable format, on a contemporary health management issue.

  2. 5. students will be able to view the strategic perspective of todays financial structure for progressive healthcare organizations

The student will pick 3 subjects from the choices below to make their presentations for the term. Two students may be presentating the same topic on the same day; however; no student will present the same topic twice with in the 3 presentations that will be done during the term. The following are list of topics that you may select for presentation, once selected please provide the selections to the instructor.
1. Congressional realignment for healthcare spending- what it means for the future of medicine
2. The demand on healthcare workers, the good, the bad, and the ugly
3. Tort reform, tell me all about it
4. Single payer system vs. multiple payer; success or failure explain
5. Government demand on Electronic Medical Records, is it safe, is it viable, and can we afford it
6. Obama Care- is it optimal or just a band aid to a falling system.

Grading:

Participation daily- 3 points=24
Power point presentations- 8 points; 3 total- week 2, 5, 7 =24
Paper turned in week 8 = 22
Final Exam 30
 
Power point presentation must have the following

The course grade for students will be based on the overall average of homework and tests taken during the course in accordance with the weighting of the various requirements as stated in the syllabus.

All final exams in all School of Business courses will be comprehensive and will be closed book and closed notes. They will constitute 30% of the total course grade and will not be a take-home exam. They will be completed during the test week in the period designated by the registrar or by the Proctor in the case online courses. If calculators are allowed, they will not be multifunctional electronic devices that include features such as: phones, cameras, instant messaging, pagers, and so forth. Electronic Computers will not be allowed on final exams unless an exception is made by the Dean of the School of Business.

Late Submission of Course Materials:
This is a capstone course, the final portion of a professionals scholastic career. All deadlines are expected to be met, however; any work turned in late will be deducted 25% of grade after the first 24 hours, after the 24 hour deadline the only credit given will be 1/2 of the grade indicated. Any material not turned in during the week of the course will recieve a zero.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:
Students are expected to act a professional and mature manner. Expected to arrive on time and ready for class with all due materials (books, presentations, papers). The student is expected to participate in class discussion and provide feedback when asked to. Cell phone use is strickly prohibited, any other music device or headphones are not be used during class time. If you have a tablet or PC, laptop the only material that should be used is class material issued by the instructor, electronic book, or material that is consistent with class session.

6. From previous course work bring a diagram of what you believe is the perfect process analysis-discuss and explain!

Discussion on leadership, and how their culture will create a thriving HCO
1. How will you create the best HCO?
2. What can you implement to maintain the culture that has been established?
3. What/how will you measure your activity to identify success or failure?
4. week two presentations from topics selected!

Discussion on Clinical performance
1. The nature and importance of clinical diagnosis?
2. What are the elements of care and why are they standardized?
3. How does community health differ from individual health?
4. What are the six dimensions of quality and how do you measure them?
5. Can non-clinical managers contribute to excellence?
 
Week 4
Nursing
1. What type of HCO is attractive to qualified nursing professionals?
2. What are key facilitators to retain nurses?
3. How can specialized nurses integrate into your HCO?
4. Explain what type of specialiazation do nurses have?
5. Discuss the future role of the nursing community in healthcare?
6. Explain nurse staffing grids and support staff?
 
Week 5
Clinical Supports
1. What are clinical supports?
2. Do HCO's really need them and why, are they financially good investments to have?
3. How does technology integrate into the investments of the facility?
4. What are the cost related benefits and is there market share for those investments?
5. Second power point presentation as selected by the student!
 
Week 6
Defining knowledge management KM
1. What is KM?
2. What are some of the critical issues in KM
3. What functions do you need to have a well implemented project?
4. Is safe guarding the information an important part of KM?
5. From a previous course work bring a diagram showing a standard process for usage, sharing, and archaving data?
6. Is KM for patient tracking only? what other uses can you have as a leader in an HCO?
 
Week 7
Financial Managment
1. What is evidence based support in financial managment?
2. How does financial management provide support in determining future goals and what is that called?
3. What is SOX and how does it blend into financial managment
4. Review of comprehensive final exam
4. Final power point presentation as selected by the student

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. from Park University 2011-2012 Undergraduate Catalog Page 93

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
