Course Description:
This course will study the earth's natural processes and phenomena that impact the earth. These natural impacts will be studied which result in massive damage to the earth and to its inhabitants. The course will explore how humans cope with natural disasters. Humans typically measure the damage in terms of loss of life or economic loss, but the end result is that these natural disasters influence human culture and population distribution. 3:0:3

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Discuss the major reasons for most natural disasters and the impact they have on societies around the world and through history.
  2. Recall the details associated with famous natural disaster events.
  3. Identify precursors to various natural disasters.
  4. Discuss the predictability of various natural disasters.
  5. Compare and contrasts the causes of Earth's worst natural disaster, mass extinctions.

Portfolio: collection of 4 assignments. Each assignment is completely or partially related to each of the core learning outcomes.

Late Submission of Course Materials:

All assignments by the start of class. Homework turned in late will be counted off 50% per day, so you have 2 days to submit it before it becomes worth ZERO Points.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:

*Students are held responsible for acquiring all materials and information missed during a class session from another student.

*Wireless (cellular) phones and/or pagers must be either turned to the silent mode (vibrate only) or OFF in the classroom.  If you do receive notice of an emergency call/page (while not taking the mid-term or final examination) quietly leave the classroom to make or receive a call in the hall or outside of the building.  Talking on a phone during class is prohibited.

*The instructor strives to create an informal and comfortable classroom environment for class discussion. However, this is an educational forum and the instructors expect students to act accordingly.  Students will treat fellow students and the instructor with respect.  Disruptive or deliberately unhelpful viewpoints will not be tolerated.

*Computers make writing and revising much easier and more productive.  Students must recognize though that technology can also cause problems.  Printers run out of ink and hard drive crash.  Students must be responsible for planning ahead and meeting deadlines in spite of technology.  Be sure to save copies of your work to disk, hard drive, and print out paper copies for backup purposes.

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
