Course Description:
CJ450 Senior Seminar in Criminal Justice: This capstone course addresses current issues and trends in criminal justice with emphasis on group discussion. Each student will be required to prepare, submit and defend a senior thesis. Successful completion of the thesis is mandatory. This course will satisfy the EN 306 requirement for Criminal Justice majors. Prerequisites: EN105, EN 106, passing the WCT and senior standing 3:0:3.

Educational Philosophy:
 

The facilitator's educational philosophy is one of interactiveness based on lectures, readings, quizzes, dialogues, examinations, internet, videos, web sites and writings. The facilitator will engage each learner in what is referred to as disputatious learning to encourage the lively exploration of ideas, issues and contradictions.

  2. Criticize factual situations, applying this knowledge.

Late Submission of Course Materials:
Any work turned in late may be down grade one letter grade if unexcused. Advise me well in advance if at all possible you expect or anticipate problems. I will work with you. Pay close attention to your term paper.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:
Treat diverse opinions in the discussions with respect. Professional conduct between all parties is expected at all times. If you must miss a class or be excessively late please advise me with as much advance notice as possible.

You will be graded on the weekly submission of thesis tasks and discussions of current issues from assigned readings in class. So come to class well prepared.

Your thesis topic/hypothesis must be approved by the instructor no later than the end of othe first week of class. All written work must be type written and in APA style. Your thesis is to be twelve to fourteen pages in length excluding references. It is to be soft bound with a cover sheet.

Late Submission of Course Materials:
 

Submission of Late Work:  All work is due the last day of class. If you cannot complete all assignments by that time, please  notify the instructor as early as possible. All late work may suffer a grade penality.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. from Park University 2011-2012 Undergraduate Catalog Page 93

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
