The Criminal Justice Department wants students to have a meaningful and memorable practical experience, which supplements classroom learning experiences. The Department expects students to keep a journal of their work activities and to analyze the experiences in the context of classroom learning. Hopefully, internships will lead students further into the areas explored or at least be a worthwhile experience in a complementary career path.
Learning Outcomes: Core Learning Outcomes
· Complete required number of hours and receive a positive letter from the supervisor 50%
· Write a six-page paper about the internship experience 20%
Late Submission of Course Materials: Failure to report during scheduled times will be counted as absences and will result in the lowering of a grade. Late journals or final papers will result in an incomplete. All materials, including letters from the internship supervisor, must be submitted to your professor by the last Wednesday of classes.
Classroom Rules of Conduct: Be present and participate with the few required meetings with classmates and professors.
Students are Responsible for Completing the Following Tasks:
1) A description of the agency and its placement in the criminal justice system;
2)Observations and experiences learned by participation in the internship;
3) A discussion of the positive and negative experiences of the internship, and;
4) Conclusions about how the internships fits into student coursework at this point in his/her university experience.
1. Find a suitable agency to complete the required internship hours.
2. Complete and return to me the Document A (attached in the Syllabus) in which you and the supervisor in the selected agency agree to the duties by both signing.
3. Keep a JOURNAL of the internship. Include in the journal thoughts about the activities participated in. This journal should be attached to the final paper. (Weekly Journal -- see notes below).
4. Maintain weekly contact with the me during the semester so that I can count you as present. This contact may be telephonic, electronic, or in person. (The online journal takes care of this -- If you miss a week, we will need to speak by phone to see what might be an issue).
5. Meet with classmates twice during the semester – at the beginning and then at the end of the Semester or respond to directions of the professor.
6. At the end of the internship, submit a paper of 6 pages explaining how the you applied the knowledge, skills, and principles presented in classroom setting, and feelings about the experiences. Attach the journal to the final paper. (This is the main writing aside from the journal).
7. Complete 135 hours of work for three hours of credit. (I will need to receive documentation of hours worked directly from the agency).
8. Make certain your supervisor sends a confidential report to me about your performance in the internship. (This is also something I need from your supervisor).
Please note that, in eCompanion, I will open up a threaded discussion forum in Weeks 1 through 16. Use this portal to post your weekly journal entries. Your first entry would be due by Sunday, August 21 (Note, if you have not started the internship yet, let me know and we can start the journal during the week you begin).
We will use this format to dialog each week. A weekly journal entry of about 250-300 words is required for the internship. I will review and comment on your entries. I expect you to return to your journal entries and respond to any comments or questions I pose to you.

Attendance Policy:Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

Meet with classmates and professors at the beginning and end of the semester to discuss positive and negative aspects of the internship experience at a scheduled time, if requested to do so, probably the first week of classes and at the mid term. If you are not a Parkville daytime student, the professor will provide directions.
2. Keep a journal of your activities during the week and submit this to your professor prior to Monday in order to be counted as present. If you miss deadlines, you will be counted as absent and will be dropped from the course. It is helpful for you and the professor if you analyze as well as describe your activities.
