Course Description:
CA402 Organizational Communication: Examines the role of communication in organizations and the people and patterns making up the many sides of complicated issues which arise in organizational life. The course also examines the communication messages sent and received within an organization including the organizations formal structure and its informal social groups. Prerequisite: CA104. 3:0:3

Minimum Requirements:  The core assessment for CA402 Organizational Communication will be a portfolio which


ü      Includes a variety of student assignments designed to show student mastery of at least eight (75 percent) of the core learning objectives for the course. 


ü      Includes an eight to ten-page research based paper that utilizes a minimum of eight sources. 


ü      Includes at least one assignment that requires students to analyze the communication in an organization (a case study of real or simulated organizational communication).


ü      Includes at least one assignment that illustrates student understanding of intercultural differences in values and communication and how that affects organizations.


ü      Includes at least one assignment assessing their own communication strengths and weaknesses and develop action plans to improve weak areas.


ü      Includes tests to illustrate knowledge of the philosophical roots of communication and the history of the field.


ü      Includes at least one assignment that addresses ethical issues in organizational communication.


ü      Must not be assembled before the last quarter of the course although it may contain work done as the semester progress, such as journals.


ü      Emphasizes activities associated with the ability to think critically and communicate effectively. 


ü      Must be transmitted to the instructor in electronic form.


The rubric and core assessment portfolio must be included in all syllabi.  Please note that one assignment may include many of these elements.  For example, a paper may analyze personal communication as well as communication within the organization or ethical communication.

Class Assessment:

Students will be graded based on a variety of activities, presentations, papers and examinations.


All work must be submitted in electronic form (word-processed, PowerPoint, etc). Make sure all written work has been proof read and spell checked. Spelling and grammatical errors have an effect on the effectiveness and clarity of your communication of information and ideas.  Always double-check your work prior to submitting for grading.  Writing is and integral part of this course and will be evaluated on its form as well as its content. 

All papers should be typed, double-spaced, left justified, and use a 10-12 pt font. Margins should be no larger than one inch.

PowerPoint presentations should be as simple as possible, yet present the information in a credible way.  Using special effects to highlight information may be effective, but for the purposes of this course, please minimize their use.

Late Submission of Course Materials:
Late submissions will not be accepted unless arranged in advance or because of significant emergencies. 

Discussion activities cannot be made up, because they happen in class.
 

Missed assignments must be made up within one week of the excused absence.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:

It is important to remember that taking courses in an online environment pose special problems in the communication of ideas and through use of terminology that may be unfamiliar to your classmates. Statements can be taken out of context and may result in conflicts that could hinder a student’s ability to successfully complete the course, or alter their desire to continue taking online courses. Therefore, it is critical that all students abide by the rules of online etiquette when posting to questions or other student responses.

The use of acronyms or online “slang” is not considered appropriate for this forum. The student is expected to express his or herself in a scholarly, intelligent, and professional manner at all times. This is not to discourage the student from expressing their personality and humor in their postings, but please be mindful of the problems that can arise from inappropriate language and unfamiliar terminology.

Professional conduct is expected by all students at all times, as well as tolerance and acceptance of other ideas and beliefs. A credible level of effort appropriate to the course material is expected. Although this will vary from student to student due to work or personal events, it is the responsibility of the student to be adequately prepared for all class sessions. Students are expected to communicate with the instructor regarding absences, perceived deficiencies in coursework performance, etc.

Park University policies regarding academic honesty/plagiarism will be strictly enforced. Any indication of cheating or plagiarism on tests, examinations, papers, or other course assignments will not be tolerated. Plagiarism is the appropriation or imitation of the language or ideas of another person and presenting them as their own work, and sometimes occurs through carelessness or ignorance. Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. from Park University 2011-2012 Undergraduate Catalog Page 95

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
ONLINE NOTE: Students must participate in an academically related activity on a weekly basis in order to be marked present in an online class. Examples of academically-related activities include but are not limited to: contributing to an online discussion, completing a quiz or exam, completing an assignment, initiating contact with a faculty member to ask a course related question, or using any of the learning management system tools.
