Course Description:
GGP340 Environmental Planning: This course is designed to study and evaluate the air and water environments, solid waste, noise pollution, and toxic wastes for the purpose of achieving environmental quality. An emphasis will be placed on how urbanization is impacting the environment and will be studied by interpretive maps, soil surveys, remote sensors, and computers. 3:0:3.

Educational Philosophy:
Good reference materials, an active exchange of ideas and a willingness to participate fully are essential in education. Everyone must dive in with their questions, opinions and personal experiences. While it’s important to have a clear definition of the objectives of a course, it’s equally important to maintain flexibility and creativity.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Examine the components and historical evolution of human environments.
  2. Identify and analyze how places change and how humans can create quality controls in the environment
  3. Evaluate the processes and procedures of the planning system and how they impact the regional and global community.


Class Assessment:
Discussion
Students are expected to participate in online discussions each week. This is the only way to receive discussion points. “Discussion” refers to a give and take, an exchange of ideas, not just “yes,” “I agree,” or “me too.” Everyone should dive in with their questions, opinions and personal experiences. It’s all valuable. A short list of questions will be provided each week. Students may choose any question to answer for the week. Some questions ask for facts but most ask for opinions. A reply to another student’s answer posting is also required each week. Plagiarism is never acceptable, not in research papers, and not in discussion postings.
 
Assignments
Four short research papers will be assigned. They are a minimum of two pages each. A standard report format should be used. All sources should be cited. (Wikipedia is not an acceptable source for reports but can certainly be useful as a starting point for further research.)
 
Midterm exam
The exam is open book/notes. There is no time limit. The format will consist of short answer and matching questions.
 
Final project
A longer paper will be due at the end of the term. Students will be asked to design an environmentally planned community. Again, a standard report format should be used.
 
Final exam (Core Assessment)
The exam is comprehensive and will be closed book/notes. You will have a 2-hour time limit. The format will consist of multiple choice, true/false, fill-in-the-blank and short answer questions. This is a proctored exam. You MUST follow the Park University procedures for obtaining an approved proctor. Please refer to the Help and Resources page to review the requirements for locating a proctor and the procedure for completing a Proctor Request Form. For proctored examinations, a photo identification is required. A proctor request form will be made available to you during the first week of class so that you can send your requested proctor to your instructor for approval. It will be the responsibility of the student to arrange for a proctor, who is accepted and approved by the course instructor, by the 6th week of the term. Approval of the proctors is at the discretion of the Online Instructor. Failure to take a final proctored exam will result in an automatic "F" grade.

Late Submission of Course Materials:
Assignments submitted within 48 hours of the announced due date and time will be penalized 50% of the grade. Assignments will not be accepted after 48 hours past due.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:
Emergencies: In the event of an emergency, please contact the instructor immediately. Waiting until an assignment is late or a week has gone by with no participation is too late. If you’re not sure if your situation is an emergency, ask!

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
ONLINE NOTE: Students must participate in an academically related activity on a weekly basis in order to be marked present in an online class. Examples of academically-related activities include but are not limited to: contributing to an online discussion, completing a quiz or exam, completing an assignment, initiating contact with a faculty member to ask a course related question, or using any of the learning management system tools.
