Course Description:
MG101 Introduction to Management: Basic functions of management with emphasis on the behavioral problems management face in adopting and implementing policy. 3:0:3

Learning Outcomes:
  Core Learning Outcomes

  1. List and describe the functions of management.
  2. Explain how the emphasis on respective functions of management will change at the various levels of the organization.
  3. Describe the managerial activities and functions of a supervisor, a mid-level manager, and an executive.
  4. Describe two organization environments that would require extremely different styles of management.
  5. Explain how centralization and decentralization affect managerial decision making.
  6. Define the terms “span of control” and “scope of authority”.
  7. Define the terms “effectiveness” and “efficiency.”
  8. Compare and contrast “leadership” and “management.”

Core Assessment:
All Park University courses must include a core assessment that measures the course's Core Learning Outcomes. The purpose of this assessment is to determine if expectations have been met concerning mastery of learning outcomes across all instructional modalities.  

For this course, the core assessment is a Comprehensive Final Examination to be administered in all sections of MG101. This exam is worth at least 30 percent of the student's final grade and will test students' mastery of the Core Learning Outcomes (as listed on this syllabus) through definitions, essay, and/or multiple choice questions. 

 This core assessment is a CLOSED BOOK, CLOSED NOTES comprehensive examination that must be administered and proctored in the classroom and may not be given as a take-home examination. Students should not have access to the exam or its questions before it is administered. The duration of the exam can be no longer than two hours. 

 No calculators, computers, or materials other than a writing instrument may be used for the exam; this applies to all students, regardless of whether the exam is for on-line or face-to-face students. Completion of the exam is strictly individual; students may not work in groups to complete the exam.

Class Assessment:

The student's final course grade will be based on a 1000 POINT SCALE.  Point distribution is as follows: 

Class Participation (24%) – 240 Points / 40 points (for weekly classroom)) X 6 weeks 
Students will actively participate in classroom activities. This includes, but is not limited to, completion of the relevant readings prior to class, interactive discussion, homework assignments and detailed.

In-Class Activities

Students are expected to be actively involved, providing substantial contributions to classroom discussion.  Students who contribute in this manner will receive full participation points for the weekly in-class activities.  Students who miss class can opt to provide an outline of of covered chapters to receive full points.  Students who choose not to accomplish chapter outlines will not receive participation points for the missed session (details can be discussed with the instructor on a case by case basis).

Weekly Quizzes - (24%) - 240 Points / 40 Points X 6 weeks

Quizzes will be an open-book assessment, covering information for the respective week of class

Mid-Term Examination (22%) - 220 Points

The Mid-Term exam is a closed-book assessment that will cover the first four weeks of class.

Final Examination (30%) - 300 Points

The Final Exam is a closed-book comprehensive assessment that will cover all material learned during the course of this class.


Grading will be based on student classroom participation, homework, mid-term, and final examination.  Students who do not actively participate on a regular basis should not expect to perform as well as those who do.  The method of evaluating the total points earned and grades awarded will be based on the following scale:

900 - 1000 =   A

800 - 899 =     B

700 - 799 =     C

600 - 699 =     D

0 - 599 =         F

The course grade for students will be based on the overall average of homework and tests taken during the course in accordance with the weighting of the various requirements as stated in the syllabus.

All final exams in all School of Business courses will be comprehensive and will be closed book and closed notes. They will constitute 30% of the total course grade and will not be a take-home exam. They will be completed during the test week in the period designated by the registrar or by the Proctor in the case online courses. If calculators are allowed, they will not be multifunctional electronic devices that include features such as: phones, cameras, instant messaging, pagers, and so forth. Electronic Computers will not be allowed on final exams unless an exception is made by the Dean of the School of Business.

Late Submission of Course Materials:
If you know you will be gone, you must discuss with me PRIOR to your absence.  If there is an emergency, call me as soon as you have the situation under control. Be honest with me and I will work with you! I ask that you do not discuss my exception with other students.  Each person's life is different so my decisions are based off the situation.

If you have a military commitment, assignments must be submitted PRIOR to the approved absent date. I do require a commander or supervisor letter if it is due to a short notice duty after work OR TDY.  Also, since you are missing the in class assignment, I will provide you the guidelines of the assignment which will be due by the next class meeting date.  YOU WILL LOSE POINTS FOR LATE ASSIGNMENTS.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:
The classroom will be treated as a workplace environment.  Please be respectful to others and their opinions.  This is a learning environment. 

Course Topic/Dates/Assignments:


  • All assignments must be typed & use Comic, 12 Font & due by the date provided
  • "Understand the Chapter" questions can be single spaced, all on the same page.
  • "Case Studies" must be double spaced with a minimum of 1 page.
  • No casual writing.
  • Points will be lost for incorrect grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  • In class assignments will consist of videos and group discussions.   You will receive 5 bonus points for attendance.
  • Microsoft 2003 or 2007   
  • Please meet all deadlines however, you may submit assignments ahead of time for extra credit.

Week 1 & 2:  Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4: Complete all chapter questions for each chapter. Complete the case study for each chapter. Assignments due by end of second week or sooner.

Week 3 & 4:  Chapters 5, 6, 7, 8: Complete all chapter questions for each chapter. Complete the case study for each chapter. Assignments due by end of fourth week or sooner. 
MIDTERM: Wednesday starting the fifth week

Week 5 & 6: Chapters 9, 10, 11, 12: Complete all chapter questions for each chapter. Complete the case study for each chapter. Assignments due by end of sixth week sooner.  

Week 7 & 8: Chapters 13 & 14: Complete all chapter questions for each chapter. Complete the case study for each chapter.  Assignments due the end of week 7 or sooner.  
Last Wednesday of term: Final exam (comprehensive)

Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. from Park University 2011-2012 Undergraduate Catalog Page 93

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
