Course Description:
CJ450 Senior Seminar in Criminal Justice: This capstone course addresses current issues and trends in criminal justice with emphasis on group discussion. Each student will be required to prepare, submit and defend a senior thesis. Successful completion of the thesis is mandatory. This course will satisfy the EN 306 requirement for Criminal Justice majors. Prerequisites: EN105, EN 106, passing the WCT and senior standing 3:0:3.

Educational Philosophy:

The facilitator's educational philosophy is one of interactiveness based on lectures, readings, quizzes, dialogues, examinations, internet, videos, web sites and writings. The facilitator will engage each learner in what is referred to as disputatious learning to encourage the lively exploration of ideas, issues and contradictions.

You will be graded on the weekly submission of thesis tasks and discussions of current issues from assigned readings. Look under the tabs for assignment and discussion in each weekly unit.

The final exam will be on the topics discussed weekly. 
A final examination will be taken the last day of class.  

This is a blended course.  The class will meet face to face each Monday effective January 14 through March 4, 2012. During those same weeks online discussion from the text and thesis information will be uploaded and discussed. The final exam is now scheduled for March 4, 2013

There will be four elements of assessment:

1. Thesis 40% of grade  (includes defense of thesis)

2. Discussion 1 (weekly topics) online 17%

3. Discussion 2 (thesis topics) 10%

4. Final Exam 33%


 There will he 1000 total points  for the course

Your thesis is 400 points  
Participation in discussion area 1 (current issues) 170 points 
Discussion 2 - 100 
Final exam on current issues 330 points

Late Submission of Course Materials:

Submission of Late Work:  Each week runs from Monday morning through Sunday night, 11:59 pm, Central Standard Time. I enter grades for the previous week on Monday morning and these grades are not changed. Late submissions with a valid and validated excuse will be downgraded per day for each day that the assignment is late.  The term paper may not be turned in late without a submission of all work completed on the paper.  Based on this submission, the instructor will make a decision on whether or not to accept a late term paper.

This course is offered face to face and online. This is known as a blended course.  This should give us the opportunity to review issues in the discussion, textbook issues and questions and your thesis.

You have some work with your classmates in the discussion area. 1) In  discussion area two, you should be sharing your insights and progress on your thesis with them. 2) In discussion area 1 area, you should be discussing the readings and answering questions about the current issue. Each area of discussion will prompt you with what is expected.

In order to satisfactorily complete this blended class, you should plan to spend each Monday or other designated day per week in the classroom with your instructor. During the week you will be required to submit work related to the thesis and questions in course topics into the online discussion assignments.  This may include time in Discussion Area  or reading and writing on your own. Then you should spend some time reading and analyzing the current issues and answering the questions posed by the instructor in Discussion  on course topics.

You should use e-mail for private messages to your professor and other students. The class discussion is for public messages. The discussion area is similar to a tradition classroom where anything you say may be heard/seen by everyone in the class.

Students should review the applicable online policies noted below. If you have questions about any of these policies, please contact your instructor for clarification.

Online Course Policies:

A class week is defined as the period of time between Monday 12:01 am EST and Sunday at 11:59 PM EST. The first week begins the first day of the term/semester. Assignments scheduled for completion during a class week should be completed and successfully submitted by the posted due date.
Create a back up file of every piece of work you submit for grading. This will ensure that a computer glitch or a glitch in cyberspace won't erase your efforts.
When files are sent attached to an email, the files should be in either Microsoft Word, RTF, ASCII, txt, or PDF file formats.

 Ground Rules for Online Communication & Participation

General email: Students should use email for private messages to the instructor and other students. When sending email other than assignments, you must identify yourself fully by name and class in all email sent to your instructor and/or other members of our class.
Online threaded discussions: are public messages and all writings in this area will be viewable by the entire class or assigned group members.
Online Instructor Response Policy:  Online Instructors will check email frequently and will respond to course-related questions within 24-48 hours.

Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. from Park University 2011-2012 Undergraduate Catalog Page 95

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
