Course Description:
Fundamentals of basic algebra.  Topics include:  the real number system, basic operations of algebra, linear and quadratic equations, inequalities and functions, and graphs.  Additional topics may include exponents and logarithms, fundamental techniques of counting.  3:0:3

  2. Solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable and verify solution(s)
  3. Manipulate and simplify exponential expressions
  4. Perform arithmetic on and factor polynomials and solve polynomial equations
  5. Solve “word” problems
  6. Manipulate and simplify rational expressions
  7. Manipulate and simplify radical expressions and translate into/ from exponential form
  8. Solve equations involving radicals
  9. Apply the method of completing the square
  10. Apply the quadratic formula
  11. Graph algebraic equations and inequalities of one and two variables.

Class Assessment:
80% of the grade will be an average of weekly quiz grades, 20% will be the final test grade.

Grading:
Grading: 90-100  A 80-89   B 70-79   C 60-69   D 0-59     F

Late Submission of Course Materials:
If it is necessary to miss a class the quiz needs to be made up before next class period or the grade earned will be a zero. If student's absence is unexcused, there won't be an opportunity to make up the quiz, it will be a zero.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:
Students need to respect other students, the school building, and the instructor.

It is very important to attend class.  Not attending could result in a zero on a quiz grade.  Depending on the material covered, the following assignments could change.  This is what I plan on assigning but if we can not make it through all of the material, the assignment could change and it is the responsibility of the student to be current on the homework.

Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. from Park University 2011-2012 Undergraduate Catalog Page 95

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
