Course Description:
SO 220 Ethical Issues in Social Sciences: Considers the moral and ethical consequences of conducting social science research. Disseminating the results, and implementing practices and policies based on those findings. Critically examines those questions and choices rising at each stage of the research process, and the results of those choices on relevant parties. 3:0:3 Prerequisite: and introductory social science course (i.e., SO 141, PS101)

Educational Philosophy:
 

My philosophy begins with the connection between student and teacher. The rapport that is developed between student and teacher facilitates the learning experience for both involved. This learning experience stays with us throughout our lives, thus making this a very important aspect in our career and in our professionalism. I believe in embracing change and in the promoting social change. Also, I believe that a true scholar is dedicated to the change within the communities we live and work in. Teaching is vital to this commitment to change for it leads students into enlightenment of not only self, but of those around us in our community. Teaching is a commitment to truth, to society and the stability of our future. A learning environment provides opportunities to voice opinions, to share ideas, and to agree or disagree. A learning environment should also maintain professionalism, ethic and a scholarly vision/goal. My commitment to my students is to uphold all aspects of my educational philosophy; therefore, creating a learning experience that will serve as a stepping stone towards positive social change.

  Instructor Learning Outcomes

  1. Student will demonstrate major ethical issues in history by midterm.
  2. Student will demonstrate critical thinking by using decision making model.
  3. Student will demonstrate correct implementation of Decision Making Model.
  4. Student will be able to identify unethical practice within a research group.
Class Assessment:
Core Assessment:

 
Core Assessment will be in form of a group project.  Your group will chose a topic of interest and then will conduct research. There are several things to focus on when conducting your research:
 
  • Justification of your research: Why is this research needed and how will it assist with promoting social change?
  • Research Subjects:  How will you pick your sample and how will you do it ethically?
  • Confidentiality:  How will you offer confidentiality and its limitations?
  • Informed Consent: Create all documentation that will address informed consent, confidentiality and limitations.
  • How will you insure that your research is not tainted by biases?
  • How you included Human Subject Research Code of Ethics.
Groups will present their research on an assigned date.  All group members are expected to present different aspects of the research. Groups will submit to the instructor all documents used during the research.
Topic for research must be submitted for approval by week 3.  

 
 
Reflection Essay:
 
Complete the Investigator Education Program online. This online tutorial will take you at minimum on one hour.  When you complete the tutorial you will receive a certificate of completion. Print and turn in this certificate as this is worth 100 points.
 
On the last day of Week 3, you must submit a reflection essay on this tutorial.  Your essay should be at minimum of 3-4 written pages in APA  and should be submitted to me using the online classroom.  Be sure to submit your essay under the dropbox and in the correct basket.  Your essay should include the following points:
 
  • What did you find more surprising about information that was provided by the tutorial?
  • Discuss special populations and how they are affected by unethical practice.
  • How can such acts and issues be prevented for future generations?
  • What good has come out of the horrible acts in history?
Weekly Questions:
Weekly Questions will be due on Sunday of the due week.  Questions will reflect discussions, lectures and reading for that week.

Late Submission of Course Materials:

Late submission of assignments will result is grading penalties (5 points for each day late).

Classroom Rules of Conduct:

 

The classroom will uphold and encourage academic freedom at all times. Students are expected to respect the views and opinions of everyone in the classroom. The classroom is to be free of interruptions to ensure a productive learning environment. The following rules of conduct will be observed.

Ø      Cell phones, pagers will be set to silent mode. Telephone conversations will not be tolerated in the classroom during instruction. 

Ø      Debate is encouraged with special consideration to respect and academic freedom.

Ø      There will be a total of two breaks, please keep other interruptions to a minimum.

Ø      Students are expected to arrive on time and to refrain from leaving early (class will meet for the entire time assigned). Leaving early will affect your attendance.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. from Park University 2011-2012 Undergraduate Catalog Page 95

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
