Course Description:
GO 141 Introduction to Geology : The study of the earth, the materials which make it up and the mechanisms which change it. Students will explore these materials and processes in the laboratory. 3:3:4.

  Core Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify and classify minerals (as the components of rocks) and the three rock types.
  2. Identify, locate, and interpret using maps.
  3. Explain plate tectonics as the driving force that shapes physical geology.
  4. Explain how and where physical processes form and impact the earth, such as floods, volcanoes, and earthquakes.

Portfolio: collection of 3 assignments. Each assignment is completely or partially related to each of the core learning outcomes.

Final Exam The final exam, administered and due during week 8, will be comprehensive. You will have two hours to take this proctored exam.  The final proctored exam will be taken in a proctored testing environment during the 8th week at one of the Park University sites around the country or at an alternative location. The final chapter is stressed in the final but it is a comprehensive final covering all the chapters.   You must start looking for a suitable proctor by week 2 and fill form out by week 6. Failure to take the final exam will result in an F.

Here is more information to help you prepare for and take the final proctored exam: 


•You must follow the Park University procedures for obtaining an approved proctor. Please refer to the Help and Resources page to review the requirements for locating a proctor and the procedure for completing a Proctor Request Form. 
•For proctored examinations, photo identification is required at the time of the test. 
•A proctor request form will be made available to you during the first week of class so that you can send your requested proctor to your instructor for approval. It will be the responsibility of the student to arrange for a proctor, who is accepted and approved by the course instructor, by the 6th week of the term. 
•Approval of proctors is at the discretion of the Online instructor. 
•Failure to take a final proctored exam (or submit your final project for some online graduate courses) will result in an automatic "F" grade.

Grading:

Core Assessment:
The Core Assessment will be the Final Exam. This will cosist of 100 Multiple Choice questions based on Chapters 1 - 19 from the textbook.


Quizzes:
There are Quizzes for Weeks 1 - 7. Each quiz has a mix of 20 Multiple Choice Questions. The Quizzes are worth 20 pts each.


Discussions:
There are eight weekly Discussions:

  • Post your initial response to each Topic by Wednesday, midnight (CT)
  • Respond with two additional comments to other students' responses to the Topic by Sunday, midnight (CT) 
  • Support your main response with credible sources including the textbook and internet.
  • Use your own wordings and avoid copy/paste from the internet
  • The Grading Rubric can be found in each week's Discussion area

Labs:
There are eight weekly Labs:
 

  • With the exception of the Week 1 Lab, each Lab assignment comes from the Lab Manual. Each Lab is a series of questions and/or activities related to a particular Geological Feature
  • Details and Grading Rubrics for each week’s Lab can be found on the “Lab” page under each week
  • All Labs should be posted to the Dropbox by midnight Sunday

Research Papers:
There are two (2) Research Papers:

  • Weeks 5 and 8: Each research paper on  selected Geological Features including: Volcano; Groundwater; Shoreline; Plate Boundary; and Earthquake
  • Details and Grading Rubrics for each week’s Research Papers can be found on the “Research Paper” page under each week
  • Each Research Paper is worth 130 pts. Both Research Papers should be posted to the Dropbox by midnight Sunday

Late Submission of Course Materials:

Late Submission of Course Materials:

Assignments are late if they are not posted by 11:59p.m.M.S.T. the day they are due. Late assignments receive a 5% deduction for each day they are late. Assignments more than seven days late will not be accepted unless the student/learner and instructor have negotiated and mutually agreed upon an alternative submission date in advance. Technological issues are not considered valid grounds for late assignment submission. In the event of an Parker server outage, students should submit assignments through email to the instructor and post to the appropriate folder when systems are restored.

Note: No assignments will be accepted after the last day in the course, unless an Incomplete has already been approved.

Late Discussion Board Posts:
Participation in the threaded discussions is a core aspect of Park University’s learning environment. It is critical to the success of the classroom environment that students contribute to the threaded discussions in a timely manner. Please note that students can only earn participation points during the current week. For example, students must actively participate during Week 2 in order to earn participation points for Week 2. Students will not receive participation points for Week 2 if they respond in the discussion threads after the due date. No points will be earned for DQs' responses posted after the due date.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:

This is an online class and requires adherence to some basic rules of online etiquette. Mainly, avoid making disparaging remarks about others, particularly other participants, in the classroom discussions. Do not use offensive or lewd language, and avoid steering too far off topic in topical discussions. Remember that private conversations, including conversations with the instructor, are best carried out through email, where you may be able to express yourself more directly.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. from Park University 2011-2012 Undergraduate Catalog Page 95

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
ONLINE NOTE: Students must participate in an academically related activity on a weekly basis in order to be marked present in an online class. Examples of academically-related activities include but are not limited to: contributing to an online discussion, completing a quiz or exam, completing an assignment, initiating contact with a faculty member to ask a course related question, or using any of the learning management system tools.

In week 5, you will complete the first three (3) geologic stops in Your Geologic Tour.  Each student will prepare a geologic tour including five geologic stops. The last two (2) geologic  tour is due in Week 8.  Your summary of your first 3 stops in this geologic tour is due in Week 5. The first three (3) geologic stops include the following:



       
  • Stop 1: Select a volcanic active location for your first stop in your five-stop geologic tour. Do not select a location that is selected in a previous stop of your five-stop tour. 
       
  • Stop 2: Select a location with a groundwater feature for your second stop in your five-stop Geologic Features Tour. Do not select a location that is selected in a previous stop of your five-stop tour. 
       
  • Stop 3: Select a location with a shoreline feature  for your third stop in our five-stop Geologic Features Tour.  Do not select a location that is selected in a previous stop of your five-stops tour.

In week 8, you will complete the last two (2) geologic stops in Your Geologic Tour.  Each student will prepare a geologic tour including five geologic stops. Your summary of your last two (2) geologic stops in this geologic tour is due in Week 8. 



       
  • Stop 4: Select a location with a Plate Boundary feature (Divergent, Convergent, or Transform fault boundary) using Figure 15.9 in the required textbook, for your fourth stop in your five-stop Geologic Features Tour. Do not select a location that is selected in a previous stop of your five-stop tour. 
       
  • Stop 5: Select a location of an Earthquake Feature in the World, for your fifth stop in your five-stop Geologic Features Tour. Do not select a location that is selected in a previous stop of your five-stop tour.
