Textbook:
This course will cover ASP.NET with advanced concepts, Ajax, and web services. Here is the set of required books for the new content:

  1. MacDonald, Beginning ASP.NET 4 in C# 2010, 2nd Edition, APress, 2010, ISBN 978-1-4302-2608-6. (1-10.  Chapters 12-16.  ASP.NET Ajax in Chapter 25.)
  2. MacDonald, Access 2010 for Starters: The Missing Manual, O'Reilly Media / Pogue Press, 2010, ISBN 978-1-4493-8237-7. (Read Chapters 1-2 and 6-7. Skip the rest.)
  3. Ellis, ASP.NET 3.5 AJAX Pocket Guide, Magma Interactive, 2008, ISBN 0970372035. (Web services in Chapters 4 and 9.)
These books are available as an ebook. However, the final exam is open book and open notes. If you want to bring the ebook to the final exam, you must print out your material and only bring the printed material. You will not be able to read or use the ebook on the final exam. This is your responsibility if you choose to use the ebook.

You will have weekly lectures, which are required readings, as well as samples and online activities to participate in the discussions.

Book Editions

We prefer you to use Visual Studio 2010.  Web development unlike other college courses, is constantly changing. We realize some of you may have the older book or Visual Studio 2008. If you choose to use Visual Studio 2008, there are a few differences and you might want to refer to the older edition. However, your instructor will post information on transitioning to 2010 throughout the course. One of the main differences is that the configuration files will need to be changed to identify the version of ASP that you are using. If you have questions, please contact your instructor.

For the Spring 2 2012 term, the online instructor will support both 2008 and 2010 editions. The course was originally built using 2008, but is being updated to 2010. To accommodate students, the instructor will work with students who use either version for the Spring terms. However, the course in Summer 2010 will be using only ASP 4 using Visual Studio 2010.

  3. A program like WinZip or Windows Vista to submit your homework files in a Winzip compatible file.You will have to submit your homework assignments in a zipped file in the Dropbox.
There are homework exercises and weekly practice exercises in the discussion threads, which require additional software to complete the assignment. You will also be able to ask questions on the usage of the software in relation to your assignments in the weekly Question and Answer pages. You will need to create practice pages and you will want to practice creating the web pages from the book.
 
To develop Active Server Pages .NET pages you will need Visual Studio .NET Professional 2010 visual editor program that comes with a web server to preview your web pages.Visual Studio .NET Professional is available via the Microsoft Developer Network Academic Association (MSDNAA) program abbreviated as MSDNAA. Visual Studio .NET Professional is available from the MSDNAA link in the course Home menu.Visual Studio .NET Professional 2010 supports ASP.NET version 4. The current version of ASP.NET supported in class is 4.

Course Description:
CS 322 Web Programming II: This course continues the development of the Web programming skills introduced in CS321. While CS321 emphasizes client-side Web programming,CS322 emphasizes server-side Web programming. Server-side concepts will be put into practice by using ASP.NET. Students will be expected to implement an applications that utilizes ASP.NET AJAX. Optionally, students will learn about Web services and/or ASP.NET MVC. Due to the particularly dynamic nature of the Web environment, course content will change as appropriate. Prerequisite: CS321 3:0:3

Educational Philosophy:
This is a course that provides you the opportunity to expand your knowledge of programming and web development to create more dynamic and data-driven applications. The homework exercises provides you the opportunity to demonstrate your creativity, problem solving, web design, using resources and debugging capabilities and is a great way to start a web portfolio. Web development content changes daily. So, you will also learn how to locate the latest information to keep your web skills always up to date! Weekly Q & A and practice discussion threads provide you with ample opportunity to practice the skills you learn in the readings, lectures and samples. So although this is an online class, you will be doing many hands-on activities as you learn how to develop ASP.NET web programs.

  2. Construct web programming solutions from given problem descriptions.
  3. Analyze web programs in order to test, debug, and improve them.

Appraise web programs to ensure that they use proper coding conventions. . *Formulate web programs that use: *concepts covered in CS 321 - XHTML, cascading style sheets, Dynamic HTML, Javascript, forms *C# *ASP.NET *web controls *database connectivity *ASP.NET AJAX *web services (probable) *ASP.NET MVC (possible)


Core Assessment:

All Park University courses must include a core assessment tool that measures the degree to which students learn the course's learning outcomes. School policy dictates that a student's performance on the core assessment tool must count for at least 20% of the student's total course grade. School policy also dictates that the core assessment tool must cover at least 75% of a course's learning outcomes.

For this course, the core assessment tool is a final exam. Teachers must create their own final exam. In creating the final exam, teachers must follow the guidelines found in the CS322 Core Assessment Materials section of the password-protected ICS PirateNet faculty area, https://piratenet.park.edu/ics/Offices/ICS/Faculty.jnz.

In the final exam, there should be two broad categories of questions that we evaluate separately – concepts and problem solving:

Concepts (terminology and concepts that should be memorized): relevant learning outcomes – 1

Multiple-choice and true/false questions that ask the student about CS 322 concepts.

Short answer questions that ask the student to explain various concepts and trace and debug code fragments and/or programs.

Problem solving (technical skills, critical thinking, and communication):

relevant learning outcomes – 2, 3, 4, 5

Given a problem description, produce a solution in the form of a short program or a method(s).

Class Assessment:

Weekly Discussions
Participate in each of the 8 weekly discussions according to the discussion rubric on the Course Participation page. You will have 3 topics in the discussion threads each week, content, practice and errors in web development. You will be required to participate in each one, and post a reply to your fellow student in each one. The weekly discussion threads will include additional non-graded activities including practicing creating web programs which will help you prepare for your homework projects. Although you are required to complete the activity, it is not graded as “wrong” or “right”, rather its practice for you to try the activity. But, failure to try or submit the practice activity will result in loss of points. Please refer to the grading rubric for participation on the Course Participation page.

Note that the discussions are listed in the menu as separate pages, and graded in the gradebook as separate content items. Students have often “missed” questions by not changing the dropdown list, or, they have only posted to one question, resulting in significant points being lost. This organization should help to remind students to participate in each discussion thread twice, once for the initial post and one response posting.

Quizzes
Complete the 4 quizzes which may contain a combination of short answer, true and false, and multiple choice questions. But, most of them are multiple choice type questions. These questions are to help prepare you for the final exam. There will be about 15 questions on the quizzes, which will all be taken online in Online Classroom and are timed. Quizzes are worth 30 points. They will be auto-graded and you will receive you score immediately after taking the quiz. However, you will not get to see the answers until the end of the week after everyone has taken the quiz. Each question has an answer posted at the end of the question with an explanation of the content for the question.

Homework
The assignments cover Access databases, ASP.NET web applications and web databases. Please print and read the assignment directions carefully each week. Refer to the schedule to view the due dates. If you have difficulty with any assignment, please post the question to the Question and Answer (Q & A) discussion thread.

The Q & A is a discussion thread for STUDENTS, for you to communicate with your students and get additional help, like a large student study group where the instructors drop in to help. For each homework assignment, the student is expected to upload the assignment to the Dropbox in a single zip file. Web Project
The purpose of the web project is to help you bring together all that you have learned into a single web site. Each week, you will be learning about different programming techniques and tools used to build web sites with ASP.NET.You MUST use C# with ASP.NET and create the project using Visual Studio .NET Professional 2008.This is a large project but it is not a new web site. You will be given 5 homework assignments where you are able to work on smaller parts of this project each week.At the end, during weeks 6 and 7, you will finish the project, fix any broken areas and enhance the project further with the techniques you have learned.

Final Exam
Complete a proctored comprehensive final exam during week 8 which will contain short answer, multiple choice and short answer questions and programming problems which require you to create and write web programs manually! This is a department approved final exam. The final exam is OPEN book and notes BUT no computer other than for typing your responses!You must follow the Park University procedures for obtaining an approved proctor.

To receive an A letter grade, a student must consistently show excellent work above those of his or her peers. Please refer to the grading rubrics for information on what level of performance on each assignment is expected for each grade.

This is a narrative detailed list of ALL of the assignments and assessments that are graded.  Grading is premised upon a framework that involves a 1,000 point potential for each student, based upon the following components.

8 weekly discussions are worth 40 points each week for a total of 320 points.

  1. 1 Assessment discussion assignment is worth 10 points.
  2. 4 quizzes worth 30 points each for a total of 120 points.
  3. 5 web programming homework assignments worth 50 points each for a total of 250 points.
  4. 1 programming project worth 100 points total.
  5. 1 final exam worth 200 points total.

Below is a table of the points and which week they are due. All due dates and times in the course are based on Central Standard Time Zone, because that is where the Parkville main campus is located. The eCollege servers for the Online Classroom are located in Denver, which is why you see MST on everything, Mountain Standard Time.

Changes may be made by the instructor at the instructors discretion, but all changes will be communicated to the student in the Course Announcements. The discussions include practice activities. You cannot wait until Sunday to begin to learn the content. Please plan your schedule accordingly. Each week builds on previous week's knowledge and skills. Therefore it is important to keep up with the readings and weekly discussions.

  1. Discussions are due on Thursday at midnight and Sundays at NOON.
  2. Homework is due on Sunday at NOON.
  3. Web Project is due Week 7 on Saturday at NOON.
  4. Quizzes are due on Sunday at midnight.
  5. Final Exam is due on Friday at midnight during week 8!

Late Submission of Course Materials:
Assignment due dates will be provided when it is assigned and on the Course Schedule. No late assignments will generally be accepted. Please plan accordingly. We support our active and deployed military and our disabled students! Exceptions which may be made are for military deployment or similar circumstances as determined by the instructor who may require you to submit documentation to support your request to submit an assignment late.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:

You are expected to meet the following rules:

  1. Read the Course Home and Start Here pages, Syllabus, Course Overview, Course Schedule and Textbooks and the About the Instructor (the instructor’s biography). It is recommended that you print out this information for your reference.
  2. Read all new Course Announcements each time you log into the course.
  3. Read your Park University email regularly while you are taking this course.
  4. Post an introduction about yourself in the Introductions page. You are required to post your introduction, and complete the proctor request form on time in order to pass the course. 
  5. Arrange for a proctor for the final exam according to Park University policies.
  6. Complete a proctored final exam. Students who do not complete the proctored final exam during the last week of class receive an automatic F. This is a University policy.
  7. Read each weekly home page. It is recommended that you print this page.
  8. Complete the assigned readings, learning activities and assessments each week according to the class schedule.
  9. New students should complete the Course Tour in the Help and Resources page.
  10. Comply with all Park University policies and procedures, including information technology policies with respect to usage of the Park University web servers.
  11. Submit all homework and projects using the Dropbox according to the directions provided on the assignment sheet. Some assignments will be required to be packaged using WinZip or compatible software. The instructor will not accept graded assignments via email. If your assignment cannot be uploaded, contact the help desk, and then contact your instructor.
  12. Have access to the appropriate software to complete the activities. The software is described on the Textbook page.Software you will be required to use in this course includes Visual Studio .NET Professional 2010 edition and Microsoft Access 2010. Please download and install them both during the first week of class. Students will be responsible for conforming to the assignment procedures and for their own technical support. Weekly Q & A will be provided to ask questions on programming and using the software.
  13. Do your own work! If for some reason you implement third-party code, it must be clearly identified. Failure to clearly separate and document use of any third party code may result in a 0 for the entire assignment. Hiring anyone to help or code the web site for you in any way will result in an automatic F (0 points) in the assignment and may result in failure in the course at the instructor’s discretion. If it is learned that you have hired or plaigiarized your work after the course has been completed, the instructor will recommend the University to change the grade to an F and other consequences may result. Please refer to the University policies in the Student Handbook.

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
