Educational Philosophy: Students will be involved in active learning consisting of research, writing, oral presentations and a final exam to aid in the exploration of ideas, issues and contradictions of the business environment in which we work today. Together we will explore the roles that managers play in the growth and development of their organization. My role is to challenge your management thoughts, skills and abilities.
Learning Outcomes: Core Learning Outcomes
Class Assessment: Each student is responsible for materials covered in reading the chapters, handouts, presentations and a book review. The book, a management book of your choosing must be at least 150 pages in length. The group presentation will require you to work in a group, select an organization upon the instructor's approval and apply your understanding of "Management" to that organization. There will also be 4 quizzes to test your understanding of the materials covered in the course including the instructor learning outcomes. The current events will be presented in both formats; face-to-face and on-line. The current event article can be obtained from the internet, professional journal, newspaper, etc. and should not be more than 3 months old. The final exam is comprehensive. If you have not seen an episode of Undercover Boss, I encourage you to do so prior to the first night of class. Undercover Boss assignments will be covered in the online segment of the class. All assignments including the expectations of each assignment will be explained the first night of class.
Grading: Current Events: 150 points = 15%
Quizzes: 100 points = 10%
Final Exam: 200 points = 20%
Book Review: 150 points = 15%
Group Presentation: 200 points = 20%
Participation 200 points = 20%
TOTAL POINTS: 1000 points = 100%
90-100% = A
80-89% = B
70-79% = C
60-69% = D
Below 60% = F
The course grade for students will be based on the overall average of homework and tests taken during the course in accordance with the weighting of the various requirements as stated in the syllabus.
All final exams in all School of Business courses will be comprehensive and will be closed book and closed notes. They will constitute 30% of the total course grade and will not be a take-home exam. They will be completed during the test week in the period designated by the registrar or by the Proctor in the case online courses. If calculators are allowed, they will not be multifunctional electronic devices that include features such as: phones, cameras, instant messaging, pagers, and so forth. Electronic Computers will not be allowed on final exams unless an exception is made by the Dean of the School of Business.
Classroom Rules of Conduct: Attendance will be taken at the beginning and end of each class. Instructor is not responsible for contacting students or providing items from missed classes. You are expected to participate in class as well as the online segments. Be prepared for class. The assigned readings will not always be reviewed in class, but projects will represent both assigned reading and class discussions.
