Course Description:
TH105 Oral Communication: A study of verbal and nonverbal communication skills as they apply to public presentations. The course content includes facilitation of more effective communication. Open to all students.

Educational Philosophy:

Together we can all learn in an interactive environment through shared experiences. This requires:
 
- Reading the class material in advance.
- Preparing for each presentation.
- Respecting all opinions.
- Providing constructive feedback.

  Instructor Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify and explore the elements of communication.
  2. Identify how the voice works.
  3. Harness the power of stage fright.
  4. Critically evaluate the components of communication.
  5. Explore and develop the skills necessary to effectively interpret and present information
  6. Demonstrate the use of voice expressively, intelligibly, audibly, and effectively.
Class Assessment:
The student will create, rehearse, and share a final presentation 5-7 minutes in length. The subject of the presentation will be the student’s choice, but the subject must be approved by the instructor no later than week five. The presentation must be related to communication and may include examples of prose, poetry, documentary literature or from a category of the student's choosing. An outline for the presentation is due no later than week six. The outline is worth 10% of your final grade and the presentation is worth 20%.

Evaluations are key to continued improvement. You will be evaluating your follow students. Please ensure you have enough evaluation forms for each class member each week beginning with week two. Evaluation forms are available in the online classroom in the “Doc Sharing” folder.
 
All students are expected to give advance notification of absence by e-mail or by telephone. Class members will lose participation points for each absence. Excessive or frequent tardiness will result in a loss of attendance points. If there is something that will regularly prevent your timely arrival to class, notify the instructor in advance.

Late Submission of Course Materials:

All written work will be submitted through the eCompanion Drop Box.
 
Late assignments will normally not be accepted; however, if the student expects to be late with an assignment the student must notify the instructor before the assignment due date (alvin.plexico@park.edu) . The instructor will deduct 10% for each day the assignment is late, but after the third day, the student will receive a grade of zero for the late assignment.
 
Students who miss a scheduled presentation with advance notice will be given the opportunity to make-up their presentation for full credit upon their return to class. It is your responsibility to reschedule the presentation. Students who fail to attend class on the day of a scheduled presentation without advance notice will be given the opportunity to present their reading upon return to class, but for a 25% reduction in grade. It is your responsibility to explain your absence and reschedule your presentation.
 
If a student fails to complete the required presentation within two weeks of its original due date, a zero will be assigned.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:

Students will participate as fully as possible in all physical activities and will advise the instructor of any reason they may be unable to participate fully.
 
Students are expected to be supportive of one another.
 
Audience response is crucial and your full attention should be directed to your peers who are presenting.
 
You are encouraged to take notes that pertain to the presentation.
 
Students will not enter or exit the classroom during a presentation.
 
All electronic devices (e.g. cell phones) must be silenced during class.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. from Park University 2012-2013 Undergraduate Catalog Page 95

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
