Course Description:
AC425 Advanced Accounting II: Continuation of AC420. Course includes consolidated financial statements, and fund accounting. Prerequisite: AC420 and CS140 or equivalent. 3:0:3

Educational Philosophy:
I believe in learning through doing.  It is easy to talk about accounting, and I can do that all day.  But in my opinion, the best way to learn accounting is by participating in real-world situations. 

Class will be structured so that the majority of learning for the student takes place working problems that demonstrate the concepts being taught.  This practice will be accompanied by lecture so that the student understands the basic purpose of the concept and why it is used. 

Exams will be structured in much the same way - asking the student to apply the concepts that were taught to situations to make sure they understand the how and the why.

  2. Prepare segment financial reports for large corporations.
  3. Analyze various business entities such as estates and trusts and other reorganizations due to corporate restructuring.
  4. Prepare financial statements and budgets for government and not-for-profit entities.
  5. Analyze the purpose and differences in fund accounting.

This assessment is designed to assess primarily Core Learning Outcomes #1 - #5 and will make up 30% of the course grade

Class Assessment:
This course covers material found in chapters 9 - 11, 13 - 17 and the module for Derivatives & Related Issues.  Class sessions will consist of discussion and lecture activities accompanied by a review of homework assignments and examinations. Learning assessment will be based on: homework problems, class participation, and two exams.

Grading:

TOTAL POSSIBLE POINTS                          500 points

This course grade distribution is as follows:
A = 90% to 100%
B = 80% to 89%
C = 70% to 79%
D = 60% to 69%
F = 59% and below

The course grade for students will be based on the overall average of homework and tests taken during the course in accordance with the weighting of the various requirements as stated in the syllabus.

All final exams in all School of Business courses will be comprehensive and will be closed book and closed notes. They will constitute 30% of the total course grade and will not be a take-home exam. They will be completed during the test week in the period designated by the registrar or by the Proctor in the case online courses. If calculators are allowed, they will not be multifunctional electronic devices that include features such as: phones, cameras, instant messaging, pagers, and so forth. Electronic Computers will not be allowed on final exams unless an exception is made by the Dean of the School of Business.

Late Submission of Course Materials:

All assignments are expected to be submitted on the due date.  Any assignment turned in after the due date will be accepted for one week after the due date; however, the maximum score that can be obtained for that assignment will be 80%.  Assignments will not be accepted more than one week past the due date.

If the student will miss the regularly scheduled class due to an excused absence (as decided by the instructor), arrangements can be made so that the student can submit assignments without penalty.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:
Class will begin at 5:00 p.m. Cell phones should be turned off or in vibrate mode. Students may tape record (not video tape) class lectures.  Food and beverages not permitted. For the respect of other students, please keep side conversations to a minimum.

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
