Course Description:
Examination of the action techniques of Career Counseling -Psychology. The course includes use of case studies, supportive research and experiential activities.


Educational Philosophy:
My focus is on teaching the person as well as the subject. A major goal is to have students be fundamentally motivated by their interest in growing and learning , thereby gaining intrinsic value from the course rather than just having them be concerned with proving themselves relative to external criteria. I try to provide a variety of educational experiences to access the various learning styles of all students, including practical experiential learning opportunities. A practitioner myself, I try to relate course material to real world use of course content. Last, but certainly not least, I encourage academic excellence and try to mentor students relative to their special talents, abilities, and eventual contributions to the psychology field.

Learning Outcomes:

1. To describe and differentiate between career counseling techniques as they especially apply to psychology majors.

2. To describe and differentiate between various career counseling instruments.

3. Identify research which validates career counseling instruments and other associated techniques.

4. Practical application of career counseling by demonstration of career counseling techniques.

5. Practical application of career counseling by utilizing personal experiential activities.

Course Assessment:
1. Class Participation/Attendance (obviously cannot by made up) - 20 points per class.

2. Small Group Activities, individual, dyad and small group - 20 points per assignment.

3. Career Casestudy of you, assemble utilizing info from class activities, min 500 words = 100 pts.

4. Final: over identification of career counseling techniques and instruments.

Grading:
This class will be graded on a curve according to the highest score achieved by students.

A = 90 - 100%, B = 80 - 90%, C = 70 - 80%, D = 60 - 70%, F = 50 below, of the highest score in the class.

Late Submission of Course Materials:
If you miss class, you must get the assignment from one of your group members, but obviously experiential activities and participation grades cannot be made up. If your assignments are turned in late they will not receive the maximum number of points available. Points deducted will be per day and depend upon the assignment involved.



Classroom Rules of Conduct:
Courtesy and the "Golden Respect Rule"

1. Everyone has the right to their own opinions, feelings if expressed appropriately, ie assertively rather than aggressively.

2. Everyone has the right to be listened to without interruption, noise or other distractions.

3. Treat others as you would like to be treated. (unless you are a personality disorder!)

4. Stay on the topic at hand.

5. Arrive & leave, turn in assignments on time. (late assignments, less points per day)

6. Cellphones & phasors in the "off" position.

7. Excused absences for school activities require signed permission in advance, otherwise contageous disease and death are the primary excuses.

8. Diversity is celebrated in this class.

9. This is your life/education - ASK if you have questions or don't understand.

10. "Practice" psychology on yourself only - leave friends, relatives and other students to their own devices!

Academic integrity is the foundation of the academic community. Because each student has the primary responsibility for being academically honest, students are advised to read and understand all sections of this policy relating to standards of conduct and academic life.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing.

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "WH".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
NOTE: An attendance report of ā€œPā€ (present) will be recorded for students who have logged in to the Online classroom at least once during each week of the term. Recording of attendance is not equivalent to participation. Participation grades will be assigned by each instructor according to the criteria in the Grading Policy section of the syllabus.
